Hildy Good is a townie. A lifelong resident of a small community on the rocky coast of Boston's North Shore, she knows pretty much everything about everyone. And she's good at lots of things, too. A successful real-estate broker, mother, and grandmother, her days are full. But her nights have become lonely ever since her daughters, convinced their mother was drinking too much, sent her off to rehab. Now she's in recovery—more or less.

What does Mary Beth Hurt bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
the lead character is saucy, emotional and sharp. Hurt is excellent at bringing her many moods to life

Historia
Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly.

this is a rich novel with flawed, human and compelling characters. If you appreciate well-crafted 'complex' novels, you'll like this. The narrator was splendid too.

Historia
Strikingly original and intimate, That Old Ace in the Hole tracks the vast waves of change that have shaped the American landscape and character in the past century. In Bob Dollar, Proulx (The Shipping News) has created one of the most irresistible characters in contemporary fiction. "It's like seeing a painting up close and magnified," says Publishers Weekly, "with each tiny brush stroke lovingly emphasized."

solid writing and terrific narrator
Revisado: 05-26-07
this was a charming book - well-written - with characters you felt you knew by the end. The narrator was fantastic and you will delight in simply hearing the phrases flow by. Here Proulx creates a lush 'texture' you feel immersed in.

disappointing
Revisado: 05-26-07
I was looking for a light read and thought I would take a chance on this book. A previous reviewer noted that if this were your first 'Crusie romance' you would likely like it. Well it was my first but I didn't enjoy it. It was two-dimensional, predictable and dull. I sped up the 'reader' just to make it to the end.

Everyone in the family agreed to support the heiress, Camilla Galloway, in her court petition, except dreary cousin Deirdre, who suddenly demanded a small fortune for her signature.

One of Audible's very best
Revisado: 10-10-05
You will find this delicious fun. The mystery itself is clever but what makes it so appealing is the erudite humour and carefully drawn characters. The narrator is terrific and you will replay scene after scene just to hear the sparkling dialogue and 'silken' English.
If I could give this a 6 out of 5 I would. The only question is why is this the only title in Audible by this author?

How come his hands are digitally challenged?
