Historia
At the front of a middle-school classroom in Oklahoma, a boy named Khosrou (whom everyone calls "Daniel") stands, trying to tell a story. His story. But no one believes a word he says. To them he is a dark-skinned, hairy-armed boy with a big butt whose lunch smells funny; who makes things up and talks about poop too much.

Fresh, unique, powerful,
Revisado: 02-19-25
This is a fantastic memoir told in a unique voice. Touching, compassionate modern story of a lovable boy’s travel to the US from Iran. The boy is honest in his efforts to figure out who he is and how he fits into his new world while trying to hold on to his old world. The story is tragic yet uplifting. Powerful yet light. Delightful.

Best Audio book I’ve listened to in years!!
Revisado: 12-20-24
Wow! This book is beautifully written. Her development of likable main characters who grow and mature supplemented by minor characters who add depth and insight to the story are brilliant. This author is really special. The audio performance was excellent. This is the best audiobook I’ve read in two years, a real treat.

No redeemable characters
Revisado: 10-09-24
This book was depressing. I kept thinking that it would get better and that maybe the loser protagonist would become a clever detective and somehow redeem himself in the eyes of his naggy horrid wife. The characters were all grating and the dialogue was filled with off-topic rants. I should have stopped halfway through.

Historia
Family defined the cultural identity of Prachi and her brother, Yush, connecting them to a larger Indian American community amid white suburbia. But their belonging was predicated on a powerful myth: the idea that Asian Americans, and Indian Americans in particular, have perfected the alchemy of middle-class life, raising tight-knit, high-achieving families that are immune to hardship. Molding oneself to fit this image often comes at a steep, but hidden, cost.

Universal Story
Revisado: 04-16-24
Well read and powerful.
While the author clearly sees this as a book about the Indian experience in America, it is a far more universal story than that. It is a story that anyone, white or otherwise, who has grown up under the pressure of performance can relate to. It is also the story of anyone who has either a parent who is a Borderline Personality or Narcissist can deeply identify with. It is a in depth portrayal of how the dysfunction of one family member destroys those around him and how it is possible to overcome and grow from such a background. It is a beautifully written memoir and perfectly narrated.

Still reeling from the sudden death of her mother, Jess is about to do the hardest thing she's ever done: empty her childhood home so that it can be sold. As she sorts through a lifetime of memories, everything comes to a halt when she comes across something she just can’t part with: an old set of encyclopedias. To the world, the books are outdated and ready to be recycled. To Jess, they represent love and the future that her mother always wanted her to have.

The narrator was fantastic and the premise was good but the story itself was extremely slow and didn’t keep my interest. Happy ending. Low stress story.

I really did not like the narration- I’m not totally sure why but I think I didn’t like the tone of her voice and by the end I found it grating. The story was ok. The writing ok.

Good until it wasn’t
Revisado: 05-24-23
This book was cute and light through the first 20 chapters. The mystery unfolded with clues being given. But it was as though the writer just wanted the reader not to be able to solve it or to be surprised so just throws out a random ending. Extremely unsatisfying. Plus the last three chapters were filled with sappy dialogue. Ugh. Regret reading

Best Memoir I’ve read in years
Revisado: 05-17-23
I really didn’t know who Beth Moore was but as a huge fan of memoirs and seeing that this one had 5 stars, I thought I’d give it a try. I didn’t know what to make of the first part of the book which is told in a thick Arkansas accent with very descriptive, almost poetic language. But then something shifts as we watch her deepening faith as a result of overwhelming hardship. And then she seems to speak for every woman of faith I know ( whether Catholic like myself or of other brands of Christianity). She speaks of her confusion regarding devout people of faith wholeheartedly embracing Donald Trump despite his horrible and utterly unchristian behavior, as if God’s plan to save babies means that Christian women must simply accept or ignore sexual abuse. All I can say is Thank You Beth for your bravery in speaking out. A bravery that cost her everything. I do believe that for every troll or critic of Beth, there are 10 silent, devout Christian women that are saying - finally, someone is speaking up. The truth will set us free. This book is a powerful testament to the power of God amidst the horrors of life. A must read for every woman who takes their Faith seriously.

Best Audible book that I have read this
Revisado: 05-11-23
I got this book because it had a 4.9 rating, which is pretty rare, so I thought I would give it a shot. Wow!! Definitely a 5 star! It is a beautiful and interesting story and the narration is absolutely fantastic. Both narrators have beautiful voices and the characters in this book are by interesting and very likable. The writing is excellent. I would put it up there with a Gentleman in Moscow in terms of quality. A rare treat!

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Im glad my mom died is a solid read, but as memoirs go, it’s not one of my favorites. I think it’s more for iCarly fans, one of which I am not.
