Historia
American democracy is, in many people's minds, the model for the rest of the world. Fareed Zakaria points out that the American form of democracy is one of the least democratic in use today. Members of the Supreme Court and the Federal Reserve, institutions that fundamentally shape our lives, are appointed, not elected. The Bill of Rights enumerates a set of privileges to which citizens are entitled, no matter what the majority says. By restricting our democracy, we enhance our freedom.

In depth unique perspectives. As relevant in 2024 as in 2003. Well laid out and thought provoking, told in easily understood narrative.

Historia
It’s been years since the brutal ordeal that earned teenage Jane Fury the nickname The Comanche Kid. Her violent, tragic past is a secret now, one she’s tried to forget herself. Then a simple chance encounter in a small Texas town brings it all back in ways she never expected. To save everything and everyone she holds dear, Jane straps on her guns again and rides into Mexico with an inexperienced posse, a handful of Texas Rangers, and her head-strong, fifteen-year-old daughter.

Whiney narrator with whiney dialog

Who needs such downers? Could have shortened the “present” NY and concentrated on Irish story. Disappointing after American Dirt and the one about the Irish boy and his unusual clan.

Historia
Neal Carey is not your usual private eye. A graduate student at Columbia University, he grew up on the streets of New York, usually on the wrong side of the law. Then he met a P.I. who introduced him to the Bank, an exclusive institution with a sideline in keeping its wealthy clients happy and out of trouble. They pay Neal's college tuition, and Neal gets an education that can't be found in any textbook, from learning how to trail a suspect to mastering the proper way to search a room. Now it's payback time.

Great Series with Neal Carey
Revisado: 05-23-23
Fun, great writing, entertaining, fast moving. Each of the five books with Neal Carey as the P.I. are just delightful. Black humor for sure. Best narration I’ve heard on audio books: JOE BARRETT deserves top awards, if any are given for narration, for making every character unique and recognizable. Not only that, he puts personality and emotions and situation into each role. He truly makes each book come to life. My husband and I listen to an Audible together (mostly mysteries) for an hour or so each day—or while in the car. He loves this series! Makes him laugh out loud. Don Winslow has a gift for metaphors and storytelling. Highly recommend.

Deep Character Study in New Mexico
Revisado: 02-19-23
Despite others’ comments about the narration and mispronounced Spanish names and words, Gary Tiedemann did a superb job of separating every character’s identity so the listener had no trouble following each voice. The mispronunciations were few and far between. I listened twice to the book and three times in parts in order to lead a discussion—even better the second time through. This book is real and ordinary and extraordinary. Writing is wonderful. Every character is endearing, even though the listener/reader would wish to shake every one of them—except Connor, who brings this dysfuctional family together. It has true heart, humor, and honesty. Thank you, Kirstin Valdez Quade.

Black is a good color…
Revisado: 11-04-22
…to describe this book. Dark ugly words and conversations throughout. If you are the least bit depressed, do not read/listen to this book! Author had to have been in a dark place when she wrote this. Not one pleasant passage in the entire story. Every single main character was angry with the world and let everyone in their path know it. Downer.

Best Narration!
Revisado: 10-11-22
If there is a reward for narration of books, Alan Devally deserves the best performance EVER! He made every character and situation come alive! I loved this book, but I think the narration made it even better. Jeanine Cummins introduced me to a group of people I’d not known about before. I was led to do some research on the Pavees—and she seems to have pegged their lives pretty well. This is a story that will stay with me…just as American Dirt has. Well worth the listen for sure! Highly recommend.
