Keefe threads the needle that sews all of human kind’s dual capacity for magnanimous aspiration and wretched violence together in this book. He does it very well and no reader will be disappointed. Exploring the contradictions of this condition at the human level through compelling reporting on the lives of key individuals, and at the political level through balanced storytelling and analysis, Keefe hands a beautiful vessel of truth to all in this book. In so doing, he serves as a guide, steadily holding the hands of readers as he takes them into the uncomfortable wilderness of the human soul as it confronts and manifests violence, ideology, and time. All should read, not only to understand the troubles and peace, but to understand themselves and how they will choose to hold themselves and others accountable.
