Historia
Global demand for power is doubling every two decades, but electricity remains one of the most difficult forms of energy to supply and do so reliably. Today, some three billion people live in places where per-capita electricity use is less than what's used by an average American refrigerator. How we close the colossal gap between the electricity rich and the electricity poor will determine our success in addressing issues like women's rights, inequality, and climate change.

Important book
Revisado: 09-11-23
Granted the book has now been out for a few years but it’s almost better that way. The trends Robert speaks of have generally continued, and not in a good way, though reality is starting to set in some corners. Renewables are important and should continue growing but their potential has been way oversold. New nuclear, more gas-fired generation, carbon capture, hydrogen, and other new innovations must be part of our energy future.

Historia
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

Too one-sided
Revisado: 08-08-23
I stopped reading part way through. It’s too one-sided in the almost completely negative picture it paints of U.S. dealings with Cuba over the many years. The U.S. isn’t perfect but this book is over the top.

Historia
Rockefeller was the quintessential industrialist. He created an industry out of nascent oil and gas start-ups during a time when none existed. His strategies and tactics may not have been approved by all, but he was certain he was doing God’s work. We live in a world today that is based on the actions of John D. Rockefeller. Everything we do and how we live are the result of oil and its power. This inherent structure is based on what one man did when the oil industry was just starting off.

Quite good but…
Revisado: 06-03-23
For me it was the right amount of information and it offered a fair look at the man, including the good and not so good sides of his life. I’m sorry to say however that I found one aspect of the narration a distraction. In too many sentences the wrong word was oddly emphasized, sometimes missing the key point the sentence was intended to make. I hate to be negative but there it is.

Fascinating story
Revisado: 12-03-22
The book is a fairly sweeping history of U.S. spying activities against the Soviet Union. It’s a necessary and often nasty business. They spy, we spy, we all know it, and then both sides play their part to be shocked and angry when it is discovered.

Historia
William F. Buckley, Jr., was the foremost architect of the conservative movement that swept the American political landscape from the 1960s to the early 2000s. When Buckley launched National Review, in 1955, conservatism was a beleaguered, fringe segment of the Republican Party. Three decades later Ronald Reagan - who credited National Review with shaping his beliefs - was in the White House. Buckley and his allies devised a new-model conservatism.

Revisado: 10-30-22
The name would suggest that Buckley would be a bit more featured. The book veers off into basic history lessons at times. It starts strong but I found myself fast forwarding through chunks of it.

Historia
Declan Walsh is one of the New York Times's most distinguished international correspondents. His electrifying portrait of Pakistan over a tumultuous decade captures the sweep of this strange, wondrous, and benighted country through the dramatic lives of nine fascinating individuals. On assignment as the country careened between crises, Walsh traveled from the raucous port of Karachi to the salons of Lahore, and from Baluchistan to the mountains of Waziristan. He met a diverse cast of extraordinary Pakistanis....

I didn’t realize how little I understood of Pakistan until I listened to this book. I must say though, it didn’t leave me optimistic about its future. Unfortunately, Pakistan’s problems don’t remain inside its borders. As to other comments about Roger Clark’s narration, I thought it was perfect for the book.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s exquisite reading
Revisado: 12-25-21
I don’t know what I can add of the novel itself that hasn’t been said a thousand time before, but I would like to applaud the work of narrator Maggie Gyllenhaal. Her sumptuous voice, with its precise enunciation and inflection, effortlessly nailing all the very challenging Russian names, added greatly to the joy of my “reading” the famous novel for the first time.

Quite good but not great
Revisado: 09-04-21
Bender clearly had great access and tells the sordid story well. Overall it’s a good book. However, I’m a political junkie and even I had to skip over the minutiae about polling, data, and advertising strategy. My other problem was the reader. The voice he uses to read quotes seems to intentionally make the characters sound like idiots. Granted, many were and still are but it is distracting to listen to.

Twenty years ago, Bill Bryson went on a trip around Britain to discover and celebrate that green and pleasant land. The result was Notes from a Small Island, a true classic and one of the bestselling travel books ever written. Now he has traveled about Britain again, by bus and train and rental car and on foot, to see what has changed—and what hasn’t.

Revisado: 03-20-21
So much complaining and condescension. Most everyone is an idiot except Bryson. One just has to listen to too much of that sort of thing to get to the enjoyable nuggets. The nuggets are most definitely still there though. I gave up with a couple hours to go. For the record, I thoroughly enjoyed some of his earlier works.
