Historia
Hailed as "the great nature writer of this generation" (Wall Street Journal), Robert Macfarlane is the celebrated author of books about the intersections of the human and the natural realms. In Underland, he delivers his masterpiece: an epic exploration of the Earth's underworlds as they exist in myth, literature, memory, and the land itself.

Sexist and stylistically repetitive
Revisado: 03-21-20
Sexism: This book has an entire chapter on dark matter that doesn't mention Vera Rubin once, though it does find space to go on and on about Fritz Zwicky and Albert Einstein and some random male grad student the author met.
Style: The writing can be pleasant in short bursts, but listen to it too long and you become painfully aware of endless phrases like "crick of the ship, jig of the chip, more morsels for dolphins and their dorsals". That's not an actually line from the book, but it may as well be. There's only so much cutesy alliteration and subverted rhyme scheme that I can take while listening to nominal prose.
The narration is good.

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

Historia
In her phenomenally popular essays and long-running Tumblr blog, Roxane Gay has written with intimacy and sensitivity about food and body, using her own emotional and psychological struggles as a means of exploring our shared anxieties over pleasure, consumption, appearance, and health. As a woman who describes her own body as "wildly undisciplined", Roxane understands the tension between desire and denial, between self-comfort and self-care.

I loved this book. It helped me think much more clearly about other people and their bodies, their lives. I'm more empathetic and thoughtful for having listened to this. And Roxanne Gay narrates her own work perfectly.

Drawing on Black intellectual and grassroots organizing traditions, including the Haitian Revolution, the US civil rights movement, and LGBTQ rights and feminist movements, Unapologetic challenges all of us engaged in the social justice struggle to make the movement for Black liberation more radical, more queer, and more feminist. This audiobook provides a vision for how social justice movements can become sharper and more effective through principled struggle, healing justice, and leadership development.

Essential listening for every progressive activist
Revisado: 01-09-20
This book is a powerful manifesto for intersectionality in activism and organizing, told by a frontline soldier in struggles for human equality. It also demonstrates the importance of short-term tactics and long-term strategies working in concert with boundless vision to achieve this equality. And the author reads her work perfectly. This audiobook has my unqualified recommendation.

Today, we are at a turning point as we face ecological and political crises that are rooted in conflicts over the land itself. But these problems can be solved if we draw on elements of our tradition that move us toward a new commonwealth - a community founded on the well-being of all people and the natural world.

This book lays out how we can think about human and environmental health in ways that don't arbitrarily separate the two concepts or hide them behind imagined barriers of monetary cost. I will be revisiting this one many times.

Historia
Thirteen months after Trump allegedly captured the allegiance of "the white working class", a strike wave - the first in over four decades - rocked the United States. Inspired by the wildcat victory in West Virginia, teachers in Oklahoma, Arizona, and across the country walked off their jobs and shut down their schools to demand better pay for educators, more funding for students, and an end to years of austerity.

Historia
Some Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America - more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society.

Horrifying historical narrative
Revisado: 09-23-19
This book should be taught from in middle and high schools. It's that important.
Unfortunately, the narrator did not seem to have prepared his delivery very well. There is emphasis on the wrong words in hundreds of sentences, and inappropriate delivery relative to punctuation just as often. As a result, I was frequently confused about which clause or sentence we were in, and what the order of clause dependence was supposed to be.

Historia
In the year 2018, it seems as if women’s anger has suddenly erupted into the public conversation. But long before this, women’s anger was not only politically catalytic - but politically problematic. With eloquence and fervor, Rebecca tracks the history of female anger as political fuel - from suffragettes chaining themselves to the White House to office workers vacating their buildings after Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court. She deconstructs society’s (and the media’s) condemnation of female emotion (notably, rage) and the impact of resulting repercussions.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.
