The idea behind the story was very intriguing, but I felt like it wasn't well executed.

Historia
Munich, 1938. Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent as determined to prove her worth in a male-dominated profession as she is to expose the growing tyranny in Nazi Germany. To do so, she must walk a thin line. If she offends the government, she could be expelled from the country - or worse. If she fails to truthfully report on major stories, she'll never be able to give a voice to the oppressed - and wake up the folks back home.

very YA and odd narration
Revisado: 05-03-24
Listeners should know that this is a Christian fiction novel. Nothing indicates it in the description. I figured it out about an hour in when the grown up characters were cheesing like they were in high school. I'm a Christian but don't tend to read Christian fiction because it's usually cheesy (as this was). Also, the narrator made the Germans sound like swamp witches and it was hilarious and strange at the same time.

these adults need a kick in the pants
Revisado: 01-05-24
This book is mostly about an 11 year old being abused by several disgusting adults. I wouldn't call the "friendship" on the blurb an actual friendship unless you enjoy toxic friendships where the adult actually kind of wants to kill you. So many themes in the book were touched on and never revisited or fleshed out. I really don't understand the hype. I feel like the most important message of the story lasted for maybe three pages at the end and other than that it was just a drag with a bunch of characters who need to get poked in the eye.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

What the meth is wrong with these sociopaths?
Revisado: 10-10-22
WWII historical fiction is my favorite and most read genre. I also am a musician with a music degree. So a story set in WWII about a family of musicians should have been amazing for me. But NO. This entire book is just a bunch of pretentious, spoiled sociopaths whining about each other and their music. I HATE THEM. I hated this book. And how was Maggie so absolutely stupid as to tell a 13 year old, bratty, German collaborator the plans of her resistance cell? And then have the audacity to be shocked at the outcome? What was wrong with these idiots?

Historia
When Jack left Eleanor West's School for Wayward Children she was carrying the body of her deliciously deranged sister - whom she had recently murdered in a fit of righteous justice - back to their home on the Moors. But death in their adopted world isn't always as permanent as it is here, and when Jack is herself carried back into the school, it becomes clear that something has happened to her. Something terrible. Something of which only the maddest of scientists could conceive. Something only her friends are equipped to help her overcome.

Why does this exist?
Revisado: 10-04-22
The vast majority of this book is just people complaining and arguing with each other. I LOVED Down Among the Sticks and Bones and now I hate the twins. I also did not like the narration at all. Maybe that's why this book annoyed me so much. This added no depth or plot and seemed woefully unnecessary.

shell of a book
Revisado: 02-08-22
Every bit of this book left me wanting more. It had the potential to be extremely engrossing, but there really was no character development and nothing really happened until everyone started dying.

Finlay Donovan is killing it...except, she’s really not. The new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head.
