I enjoy stories set in Ireland specifically for the gorgeous Irish accents so the narration shocked me at first. The writing is good — better than many in the mystery genre.

The narration is strange. Other reviewers are spot on. Speed up the narration one click and it’s much easier to listen without becoming distracted by the voice. She performs the Irish and American accents well enough, but in the main, the narrator uses an English accent that sounds overly…formal(?)

Formal is probably not the right word, but it brings to mind a Victorian aristocrat. Why the narrator chose to use such an overtly affected English accent for a story set it Dublin is a mystery.

Patrick continues to amaze me! The Yarnsworld stories are a such a treasure. I will be reading these again and again & giving the series as gifts. I can’t wait to see what Patrick comes out with next.

I’m so glad I found Benedict Patrick. His stories are complex, but not confusing. I love the way he pulls from folk lore from around the globe. Honestly, the yarnsworld series is so good, it’s hard to find the right words to describe it. Just buy it. If you hate it, you can blame me!

I couldn’t get through the first chapter. The narration is delivered in a flat American accent that somehow manages to convey an undercurrent of… anger? I can’t adequately describe it. Just listen to a sample first. You may save yourself a bit of time. There are so many amazing Irish narrators. Who made this choice and why? I’ll never know.

Gave the story a 3 but Tbf, I didn’t listen long enough to have an opinion on the author’s version of this bit of history.

I don’t think I can do this book, this series justice. First of all, I read a LOT… 3-4 books per week. After I worked my way through Gaiman, Pratchett, Tolkien, Martin, and a few others, I resigned myself to the fact that most fantasy/folklore books are written for YA. There just aren’t enough truly GREAT books in the genre. Ive just accepted that fact and lowered my expectations accordingly. To my surprise, THIS BOOK knocked my socks off. The characters are relatable and complex, the world is rich and lush, and the story is just amazing, it’s really layer upon layer of stories, woven together from folklore from around the globe. Patrick is a true shenachie. The narrator is perfect.

Halfway through chapter 1 I found myself googling his name because I already knew I wanted to read everything he’d ever written. If you love fantasy & folklore, you will love this book. JUST READ IT (or, you know, listen:)

This is my first disappointing purchase from Audible. I really wish I had purchased the print book instead of this audio book.

I understand that things like this come down to personal preference, but I did not care for the choice of narrator. The narration is stilted and awkward. She pauses at places that seem unnatural and the accents seem way off. If Anna's mom is from Georgia, why is there no hint of southern drawl to Anna's voice? (I'm only on the first part of book number one, so that may be explained further into the story.)

Bottom line - I'm not going to listen to the entire book. I will stop at a store on the way home and buy the paperback.
