Historia
Thirty years ago, award-winning journalist Jon Ronson stumbled on the mystery of Carol Howe—a charismatic, wealthy former debutante turned white supremacist spokeswoman turned undercover informant. In 1995, Carol was spying on Oklahoma’s neo-Nazis for the government just when Timothy McVeigh blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.

Spectacular
Revisado: 06-20-23
The psychopath test was my first exposure to Ronson’s work (outside watching The Men who Stare at Goats many years ago), but this short podcast really sold me on eventually listening to all of his works. I was surprised there was no mention of the “extra leg” matter in the bombing aftermath, but considering his level of detail in everything else, I believe it was left out due to it being circumstantial.

Historia
Strange as it may seem, the gray, oppressive USSR was founded on a fairy tale. It was built on the 20th-century magic called "the planned economy," which was going to gush forth an abundance of good things that the lands of capitalism could never match. And just for a little while, in the heady years of the late 1950s, the magic seemed to be working. Red Plenty is about that moment in history, and how it came, and how it went away. Red Plenty is history, it's fiction, it's as ambitious as Sputnik, and as uncompromising as an Aeroflot flight attendant.

A wonderful, melancholic, and sometimes rather confusing journey through the USSR of the mid 20th century
Revisado: 11-28-22
What I wrote above largely says it all. I found myself very much invested in the story and characters of this book. it left me wanting to delve deeper into historical fiction involving the USSR. My only complaint with the book is that, possibly due to the Russian names, it was sometimes difficult to know when a character popped up later. This is probably less of an issue in the written version because the names are more distinct on paper.

A bit underwhelming
Revisado: 11-28-22
I recently watched bullet train, so I was excited to explore more of the world from that movie, and decided to look into three assassins. While it is foolish to expect any sort of action at all similar to the movie, I felt myself somewhat underwhelmed by the end of three assassins. I saw another review that mentioned the three main characters of the book are pretty unlikable and I’m sad to admit I felt similar by the end. I will say that the best parts of the book involve the whale. On a happier note, I will say that I was quite satisfied with the readers use of slightly different voices to differentiate characters. His vocal range was quite good.
