This was a decent read. A bit too sentimental for my like. Story was a bit predictable. Good narration.

This book is long and it starts somewhat slowly. But when the many threads come together as the end, it is truly magical. Another great Iowa Writers Workshop product!

Historia
After Jim O’Connell graduated from Harvard Medical School and was nearing the end of his residency at Massachusetts General, the hospital’s chief of medicine made a proposal: Would he defer a prestigious fellowship and spend a year helping to create an organization to bring health care to homeless citizens? That year turned into O’Connell’s life’s calling. Tracy Kidder spent five years following Dr. O’Connell and his colleagues as they work with thousands of homeless patients, some of whom we meet in this illuminating book.

Admirable Work
Revisado: 10-01-24
I read this book because I am a physician myself and this book was recommended by one of my book clubs. Overall, the book was well-written. However, the further I read, I realized that this is not the type of work I could do. While I admire what he was doing, I kept getting the sense that Dr. Jim simply fed on the praises that the homeless people heaped on him. I work with a partner who loves getting compliments, but then regularly gets taken advantage of, including prescribing far too many narcotics for my liking. One neurologist describes compliments such as "You're the best physician. No one else ever listens" as a "malignant hug". I would guess that if he stopped handing out cash, the number of devoted patients would diminish. These difficult patients are simply manipulating the system to get what they think they need. The book does flesh out some of the difficulties dealing with this population, but an army of Dr. Jims would still be ineffective dealing with this problem.

Historia
It’s a hot and sticky Sunday in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Glory has settled into her usual after-church routine, meeting gamblers at the local coffee shop, where she works as a small-time bookie. Sitting at her corner table, Glory hears that her best friend—a nun beloved by the community—has been found dead in her apartment. When the police declare the mysterious death a suicide, Glory is convinced that there must be more to the story and, with her reluctant daughter in tow, launches a shadow investigation in a town of oil tycoons, church gossips, and a rumored voodoo priestess.

Disappointed
Revisado: 08-13-24
This book was suggested by one of my book clubs. Alas, I think it was only recommended because of racial "wokeness". The "funny" parts were more stupid than humorous. Moderator did a decent job. Story moved slowly. This detective story was nothing like the Thursday Murder Club series. I may have to drop that book club.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

I usually like fantasy more than horror but I decided to try this book. I'm glad I did. The book started slowly but wa a very enjoyable listen. The ending was a bit disappointing but overall this was a great listen. This was a new narrator for me, but he (and the author) were excellent!

Worst book in series
Revisado: 07-21-24
I had greatly enjoyed the first several books in this series, and still enjoyed the ghost-written editions until this one. The story was very choppy and difficult to follow. Even Lizbeth seemed to have a complete personality change. She usually had to ask for help and never really master-mindedany plans herself. Bloomquist seemed like an afterthought. Even the villainous plot was very poorly constructed. This series has probably met its realustic end, as the print edition of Millennium has (even if the respective publishers think a podcast will be as influential). Narrator did an effective job with lousy material.

Historia
"You've long set your heart against it, Axl, I know. But it's time now to think on it anew. There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay..." The Buried Giant begins as a couple set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen in years. Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in nearly a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge, and war.

Dostoevsky adds to the Arthurian Legend!
Revisado: 07-14-24
This was a well-written book. I kept waiting for the fantasy elements to show themselves, But except for a dying Ogre and Dragon, there really wasn't a lot of fantasy. The author wrote in a style similar to Dostoevsky in that the majority of the book was occupied with conversations taking multiple points of view and stories related by characters they met. I think I missed something as I really didn't understand the purpose for the last several chapters. I had already guessed that the son was either fictional or absent, and the reveal really didn't add much. Good but not great.

Historia
It’s two months before Amelia’s big audition for the Mystwick School of Musicraft. If she gets in, she will learn to spin music into powerful magic - but her Gran has one last-ditch plan to persuade her out of it: sports camp. A week of softball, sprinting, and sweaty socks isn't exactly Amelia’s idea of a good time - in fact, she's deeply, appallingly unathletic. By the end of day one, she’s puked her guts out in track, gotten a black eye in no-contact flag football, and firmly established herself as the Least Valuable Player at camp.

Quick little intro
Revisado: 07-14-24
I loved the first two books so I decided to do this quick listen. While the story was okay, it really didn't add much character development beyond the fact the she really wanted to be a musician (which wr already knew). I loved the Fur Elise reference about being able to play the intro with a whistle. I might actually recommend waiting to listen to this book after the first one to avoid people missing out on the first two books. The third book was also a bit of a letdown so I hope the author isn't losing her abilities as she continues to develop her world.
