Historia
During the overthrow of the Mexican government, Beatriz’s father was executed and her home destroyed. When handsome Don Rodolfo Solórzano proposes, Beatriz ignores the rumors surrounding his first wife’s sudden demise, choosing instead to seize the security that his estate in the countryside provides. She will have her own home again, no matter the cost. But Hacienda San Isidro is not the sanctuary she imagined. Something is wrong with the hacienda. And no one there will save her. Far from a refuge, San Isidro may be Beatriz’s doom.

Don’t skip this one!

I’m SHOCKED this is Isabel Cañas’s first novel. Her lyrical prose and character development was perfection (kisses fingers). I listened to it on audible and the voices were fantastic, but I think I’m going to buy it in print as well just so I can re-read the descriptions I may have glossed over the first time. One of my new favorite authors, I can’t wait to read more by her.

Easy occult read

I was unsure about this book since it was marketed more as YA ( not my genre of choice) but I really enjoyed it! I read it in a day and it held my attention the entire time. I would categorize this more as a thriller than as true horror.

Historia
The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

I nearly put this book down 400 times over the course of reading it. Not only did it not scare or hold my interest, I was actually bored.
There was zero character development. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book in it’s entirety and not know a single thing about any of the primary character’s personalities.
Gratuitous sex scenes written by the female POV -by a man. Need I say more? If you’re a male novelist either don’t write sex scenes from a female POV, or consult a female. Hell, consult multiple females! Most of the scenes added little to nothing to story line, and were downright unrealistic.
I could not hold onto the suspension of disbelief in this story. The backstory of the how the town became haunted was poorly written and felt thrown together at the last minute to give the present-day story some credence. It really felt like I was reading two stories simultaneously - neither very good.
The ending was ridiculous. I’m sorry but you, a human man, were able to vanquish centuries worth of angry spirits by killing yourself and moving the ghost blob you now inhabit to another place? I was literally laughing out loud at how stupid this ending was.
Do yourself a favor and don’t read this.

Historia
You’ve never met the other wives. None of you know each other, and because of this unconventional arrangement, you can see your husband only one day a week. But you love him so much you don’t care. Or at least that’s what you’ve told yourself. But one day, while you’re doing laundry, you find a scrap of paper in his pocket—an appointment reminder for a woman named Hannah, and you just know it’s another of the wives.

I really wanted to like this and was intrigued through the first few chapters. Then disappointed as the story continued. It was like someone rushed to tie pieces together in the end and did a shit job.

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword.

I wanted to like this book. It’s a Reese sunshine book club pick and while characters are imaginative, the story doesn’t go anywhere. This is one of those story lines where there are several narratives going on at once. You assume that somewhere they will converge and a plot will emerge. Not so. There are many characters across a wide expanse of them but nothing actually happens in this book. The author’s attempt to tie in social issues with the narrative feels forced as well.
