Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

I unexpectedly loved this book. It was funny, heartfelt, and easy to listen to. I could actually listen to it again just to pick up all the valuable lessons that I could get from his experiences. I highly recommend this as one of the best memoirs I have ever listened to.

By age thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: She had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend. But behind her office door, she was having panic attacks and sobbing at her desk every morning. After years of questioning what was wrong with herself, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD—a condition that occurs when trauma happens continuously, over the course of years.

More journalism than memoir
Revisado: 05-28-23
If you are looking for clinical advice regarding trauma healing, this book offers insight. The author has a lot to offer.
If you are looking for a memior, this is only partially satisfying. She tells about her childhood very matter of fact. She breezes over her own actions through college or adulthood as being angry, or only as reactions to cptsd. I wished to know more. I am more a fan of very personal memiors of true self reflection, as opposed to a more clinical approach. I did take with me some of her lessons on communication, especially from the foster kids section. But, again, that was more from the therapy notes than the memior part of the book.
I would like to see what she'll write when she's 60. I believe she will have a lot more to say, feel, and unpack.

Historia
Discovered at twelve years old, Madison Beer was one of the first artists to have her entire life documented online. Over the past decade, she has navigated the spotlight as a child, through her teenage years, and now as a young woman in her twenties. In The Half of It, Madison pulls back the curtain to show the behind-the-scenes of her journey, from reckoning with mass hate online and the time her private pictures were leaked, to battling suicidal thoughts while making her highly acclaimed debut album, Life Support, and her recovery since then.

Not really a memoir
Revisado: 05-05-23
I had no idea who this person was, but thought getting a glimpse into an "influencer's" childhood and what led them to where they are now, might be interesting. It was not. Yet. She seems like a well spoken person, but this felt like a long interview rather than a memoir. It will be interesting to read her actual memoir when she's ready to honestly unpack her childhood and reflection into adulthood. I do appreciate how she's trying to tackle bullying and anxiety a little. There just wasn't any real substance in her narrative though.

Hard to describe
Revisado: 04-08-23
It is hard to put into words a review for this book. It's beautiful, innocent, harrowing, awful, gut-wrenching, glorious, sad, heart-breaking, educational, haunting... all I can say is read this book. It's a masterpiece. I wish it didn't end.

Historia
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hawaii was ground zero for the crystal meth epidemic in the United States. While tourists have mostly been shielded from witnessing the carnage, crystal meth has wreaked havoc on the people of Hawaii like few other places in the world. On the surface, the novel Concrete Rainbow is the coming-of-age story of a troubled boy caught up in the horrors of drugs and crime. But underneath, it is a meditative study of human behavior, the nuances of cultural identity, and the effects of trauma and abuse on children in a callous society.

Exceptional
Revisado: 11-19-22
This book is truly special. It is more like an experience than just a book. From start to finish it's a journey that pulls the listener in and does not let go. The reader/writer is a gifted voice that commits to every character he reads. For most people, the story will be shocking. A glimpse into American culture that is not talked about nearly enough, the culture of growing up in Hawaii. It's a painful reminder that for every wealthy tourist is an untold story of poverty and struggle. This book is so real, so raw, so gripping and so beautifully told, I loved it. So good, you'll need to listen to some chapters twice. BUY THIS BOOK.

Historia
One Omaha winter day in November 1978, when Debora Harding was just 14, she was abducted at knifepoint from a church parking lot. She was thrown into a van, assaulted, held for ransom and then left to die as an ice storm descended over the city. Debora survived. She identified her attacker to the police and then returned to her teenage life in a dysfunctional home where she was expected to simply move on. Denial became the family coping strategy offered by her fun-loving, conflicted father and her cruelly resentful mother.

A look at trauma
Revisado: 09-19-21
I don't know how anyone could rate this book anything but 5 stars. It's honest, introspective and simply breathtaking. This is not a book solely about a violent crime, as it is much deeper than that, exploring trauma that takes place slowly, over time, from an abusive parent as well. Debora Harding has faced abuse, and done a lot of work to find her way through it. One thing she did not touch on was that she also experienced the unexpected death of her young son! This woman has gone through hell and back. The fact she could muster the strength to write this book says a lot. Although hard to listen to, I enjoyed every chapter. Anyone who has experienced a violent crime and/or the mental and physical abuse of a parent will definitely be able to relate. Excellent.

Unique Perspective
Revisado: 02-04-19
Several points of view (journalist, survivor and therapist) made this a fascinating read. It also shines light on how a committed, driven group of compassionate people can make all the difference in the world in cases like these. So happy that Katie Beers has accomplished so much and has known deep, truthful love after going through such unspeakable horrors.

So good!
Revisado: 10-29-18
I didn't know anything about the life of Sally Field but purchased this book on a recommendation. Now, passionately, I'm passing that recommendation on to you.
This book is incredibly real, raw, full of emotion, and brilliantly wtitten. It is thick with imagery and substance. I actually found myself sitting in my car long after arriving at my destination to continue listening to her story.
I laughed, I cried, I related, I didn't want it to end. Bravo, bravo, bravo.

Millions of people go to enormous lengths to achieve fame. Fame is woven into our lives in ways that may have been unimaginable in years past. Mining decades of experience, writer, director, producer, and actress Justine Bateman writes a visceral, intimate look at the experience of Fame. Struggled to follow
Revisado: 10-24-18
I was very excited to listen to this book. I thought I would get an interesting look and perspective on the author's experience with "Fame."
Instead, I got rambling, a lot of rambling. It was hard to listen to all the rambling, especially when she used 1st person, 2nd person, and tossed in 3rd person perspective, in every chapter. It was like listening to someone in a therapy session trying to describe a long (excruciatingly long) dream, or memory, they had, but couldn't quite recall. It was really difficult to listen to.
When she did slip into speaking in complete sentences, and painting a picture of an actual event or story, it was good. However, those moments were fleeting.
Not for me.
