Not a good passive listen
Revisado: 01-12-25
This might be better as a physical book read. While listening to it you can’t really do the exercises if you are doing anything else. In which case you are basically just listening to a boring guy talk for 7 hours and not really learning anything.

Historia
As a half-goddess possessing magic, Yaga is used to living on her own, her prior entanglements with mortals having led to heartbreak. She mostly keeps to her hut in the woods, where those in need of healing seek her out, even as they spread rumors about her supposed cruelty and wicked spells. But when her old friend Anastasia—now the wife of the Tsar, and suffering from a mysterious illness—arrives in her forest desperate for her protection, Yaga realizes the fate of all of Russia is tied to Anastasia’s. Yaga must step out of the shadows to protect the land she loves.

No moment of excitement
Revisado: 09-22-24
Listening to the story it was difficult to keep track of who was who with so many complicated names, this would probably be easier for someone reading the book rather than listening though. A lot of the story focuses on a romantic journey which just had me cringing the whole time and didn’t interest me at all. I couldn’t really get invested in the lives of Yaga’s human friends either. Overall it just wasn’t for me

Ten years ago, the kingdom of Jasad burned. Its magic was outlawed. Its royal family murdered. At least, that’s what Sylvia wants people to believe. The Heir of Jasad escaped the massacre, and she intends to stay hidden, especially from the armies of Nizahl that continue to hunt her people. But a moment of anger changes everything. When Arin, the Nizahl Heir, tracks a group of Jasadi rebels to her village, Sylvia accidentally reveals her magic—and captures his attention. Now Sylvia’s forced to make a deal with her greatest enemy: Help him hunt the rebels in exchange for her life.

Way too “Hunger Gamey”
Revisado: 09-19-24
I’m usually pretty forgiving of fantasy books, and the description of this one was pretty compelling, but this one was way too ‘young adult’ oriented for my taste. It’s basically just a low fantasy Hunger Games, complete with a painfully cringey romance arc. I wanted to stop listening after the first hour but I had already wasted the credit so I had to see it through.

It was fine
Revisado: 10-23-23
It was ok, just kind of boring. In retrospect it is clear that listening to a collection of republished unrelated articles is distinctly different from listening to what something that is intended as a book or collection of stories.

Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

A great adventure (and performance) in a rich world
Revisado: 09-12-23
The story always left me ready for more. The voice actress was very charismatic. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.
There was one production choice that wasn’t ideal in my opinion, During chapter interludes, the actors played with their distances from the microphones to make the story seem more like an interview with off mic commentary, and these moments could be difficult to heard while driving. But that’s my only complaint.

The Other Slavery

Historia
Since the time of Columbus, Indian slavery was illegal in much of the American continent. Yet, as Andrés Reséndez illuminates in his myth-shattering The Other Slavery, it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. There was no abolitionist movement to protect the tens of thousands of natives who were kidnapped and enslaved by the conquistadors, then forced to descend into the "mouth of hell" of 18th-century silver mines or, later, made to serve as domestics for Mormon settlers and rich Anglos.

A very important history
Revisado: 07-06-23
A very illuminating history about native exploitation in the americas. Popular history tries to write natives out of history by way of smallpox/other diseases but in addition to epidemics, there was a huge history of enslavement and coerced labor. A very dark history that people shouldn’t ignore.

Historia
Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness once again team up, this time to demystify passion, showing readers how they can find their passion, sustainably harness its power, and avoid its dangers. They ultimately argue that passion and balance - that other virtue touted by our culture - are incompatible, and that to find your passion, you must lose balance. And they show how to develop the right kind of passion, the kind that lets you achieve great things without ruining your life.

It was pretty good, but 5 star ratings get thrown around way too often on Audible
Revisado: 06-23-23
Very interesting and insightful, I will probably need to listen to it again to absorb it better. This might be a book where you would be better served actually reading rather than listening to it.

Read like a tantric yogi’s cult manifesto
Revisado: 12-21-22
Many words were said, but much of the time I feel like nothing was really being articulated. Like the author was just looking for different ways to use ravish, loving and penetrate in a sentence. He kept referencing back to the concept of the man’s gift over and over, but I feel like this concept was never introduced effectively, for the amount of weight he has for it.
It did have some good moments though with advice on relationship dynamics. For much of this book however, I only persevered out of the sheer weirdness of it.

Kinda hacky, like a less funny podcast. Really stretching a limited amount of material pretty thin. The gloating about the use of ghost writers got pretty old towards the end.

Mildly interesting subject matter but a dull listen
Revisado: 08-11-22
Book was often boring to me, probably would have been more interesting as a book read with your full attention than as an audiobook with all the myriad distractions out there. The reader did not help matters, he had a pretty uninteresting voice/style for subject matter that was often struggling to garner my attention.
