Wasted time and money
Revisado: 02-01-25
The premise was potentially excellent but the execution was very poor. The storyline jumped around for no rational reason, there was no linearity of power accumulation, personal growth, character development, or even development of the antongonists. Characters were inconsistent in emotion, emotional development and even logic. Things the understood in one chapter they would have no clue about in the following chapter. I kept listening hoping for an improvement that never came. I finally finished the series as I had already invested a bunch of hours, and because it became background noise to an unpleasant job(sanding) that I was doing.

Historia
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

Historia
In this seminal story of naval life during the Napoleonic wars, Frederick Marryat's young hero embarks upon a life at sea and finds it to be a rough school indeed. Simple's trials and triumphs, with his faithful mentor, Terence O'Brien, at his side, mirror Marryat's personal experiences. Among the exciting events depicted are the hand-to-hand combat of "cutting-out" missions, the devastating hurricane off St. Pierre, and a mutiny aboard the Rattlesnake.

Excellent, but not your typical sea yarn.

Slow to start, and the title is accurate, but the story grows with the age of the principal into an excellent, if not exuberant, yarn. Worth the listen.

not worth the time.
Revisado: 09-13-22
The book was classic Zane Grey but the narration was horrendous. It was hesitant, broken and choppy as if there were random commas every 3rd word requiring a full stop. I had to turn the speed up to 1.5x to come even close to a flow. Everyone has different tastes, but I wouldn't listen to my favorite book if it were read by Russell Bentley.

thought the premise was suspect but it turned into a very enjoyable listen. for science fiction it didn't require too much suspension of belief.

Tough listening
Revisado: 11-10-20
The premise started well enough but fell off a cliff from there. I was complaining about the book to my wife and she convinced me to keep going with "you know how some books are hard to get in to but suddenly become all engrossing? Don't give up too soon." I wish I had given up. I feel like I waisted my time. It certainly was a waste of a credit.

More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

Tough to buy in to.
Revisado: 09-15-20
The premise required a stretch, and the story ran down from there. At so many points, circumstances were unsupportable and the logic of almost every decision was hugely flawed. I finished listening because it was like worrying a loose tooth, eventually the pain will go away if you just get to the end.

Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.
