I had my whole life planned out... until I met a hockey player obsessed with breaking all of my rules. My five simple rules for hooking up keep me from being distracted. Now that I'm so close to landing my dream internship, nothing is going to make me break them. Don't forget to characterize the heroine
Revisado: 02-16-25
Jax sees Sidney and falls, but Sidney is reluctant and has daddy issues. They both connect over being driven, experiencing a death of a loved one, and just plain attraction. However, Sidney just can't give all the way in and the push and pull is a game of hearts that Jax has to decide if he can play til the end.
I didn't get mad at Sidney and didn't feel like she should just give in, though I had hang-ups about how both she and Jax went about their problems. In all, it was a decent college, NA read, with Jax being semi-swoony and Sidney being bland, but genuine; that is, she is cheated by not being characterized past her insecurities and hurt, and not given enough word time on her dreams of being a politician. Maybe if that had been developed more, some scenes would have felt more poignant.
Cookie cutter plot and NA archetypes are present, like in any other dime-a-dozen college romance/hockey romance books. This couple's spice was 🌶 🌶, with Jax being a young budding dirty talker ...a lil' bit.

What's that saying? When life hands you lemons... What if I don't want to make lemonade? What if I want to pummel them into non-existence? Anything is better than admitting how desperately I want a taste of that sweet lemonade. That's exactly how I felt when my college assignment threw me in the direction of Miller Cain. My body screams for him while my brain warns me to run for the hills. He's the captain of the ice hockey team with a cocky reputation. He's a sweet talker and the bad boy promising me the ride of my life.

Has it all, but no real development...
Revisado: 02-15-25
Miller, the college hockey god, slots into the "see-her, fall-for-her, and go-possessive" role; and Dany plays a little hard to get, after an ex has made her gun shy. However, once the ball gets rolling with these two, there's nothing profound, minus one part where the couple experiences some grief; otherwise, the plot seems to get lost under disjointed "happenings."
No OTT possessive scenes -- No memorable smuttiness to distract or at least try to make up for lack of an engrossing story. I mean...Dany and her bff Sophie are characterized as gals who like to party but still get their work done and are successful at projects, and Sophie and Miller's bff Tank have an at-first sizzling hook up, which turns into a sort of secondary romance. But, it couldn't save the story for me.

Good narration and surprisingly good story
Revisado: 02-15-25
William Bronson met Melissa Jones when she is seemingly at her lowest: newly divorced, pissed off, trying to claim her power back...but ...in a holding cell after being arrested for breaking into her hairdresser's salon, the same hairdresser who betrayed her and cheated with her husband...now ex-husband (thank goodness).
At first, I thought Will and Melissa's story would be rom-com'ish and full of Melissa pushing an interested Will away because he is younger, and she is too fresh from divorce, worrying about her kids, and trying to make her new wedding planning business, which she started with her best friend, profitable.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by the chemistry Will and Melissa cooked up and the complexity of conflicts that were woven together: Melissa's kids are adjusting, especially her preteen daughter; Will is immediately gone for Melissa but he is involved with someone else, somewhat...a matter which Will is quick about stopping but it;s residue does get unexpectedly tangled with Melissa's work; and Melissa has to navigate grief, betrayal, acceptance, and different levels of growth (a new normal) very quickly.
Luckily, the rom-com'ish feel isn't pervasive, and Will and Melissa get-it-together.
My only hangups are these:
(a) too much story space and tolerance given to Melissa's ex.
(b) I would have liked to see Melissa be more confident in Will; she needed to "get hers" and take his side sooner, ... as her man. Will gave in and let her control the flow for most of the plot, and she just wasn't decisive or making good decisions. I was yellin' like, "Melissa!"
All-in-all, yeah, this one was a good read.
Happy Reading.

I've got a lot on my plate. Not only do I have my own pack to protect, but I keep the whole six-pack territory secure by training and running the security squad. The new recruits are here for the summer, and it's my job to whip them into shape. I can't afford any distractions, but one of the female recruits is doing just that- distracting me. Fallon is the most frustrating girl I've ever met; she's all alpha female and she openly challenges my authority. She's so far from my type, but for some reason, I'm drawn to her.

Fallon and Gray
Revisado: 06-08-24
Fallon is a female wolf shifter who wants to meaningfully contribute to six-pack alliance, an organization of which her own pack and family are members. Only, she's not really interested in quickly finding a mate, one who is hopefully a part of the six-packs, guaranteeing more "interconnection," nor is she as talented as her sister, who is a math/computer wiz and pretty much has her ticket to work with the six-packs' cyber security and networking division.
The one thing that Fallon is good at is fighting; she has a competitive sprit and alpha tendencies. So it is great that she gets the chance to vie for a position with the six-packs' elite enforcement. Fallon is eager to learn from the six alphas and alpha-heirs who oversee the elite enforcement training, in addition to some of them running their own packs, and she just can resist taking risks to show her cunning, bravery and ruthlessness. Fallon doesn't expect Alpha Gray, aka Gray, and her intense attraction to him. Luckily, Gray has the hots for Fallon as well, but unfortunate, given his position, he must either stay away from Fallon, or fuck her into oblivion every chance he gets; to do this, Gray has to remove himself from any decisions or evaluations concerning Fallon, leaving her to his fellow alphas, and still maintain professionalism and non-bias.
In all, I really liked this world. Fallon and Gray sizzled, and the action scenes, when detailed, had me rooting for Fallon to "win" or to outsmart the program. However, Fallon proves to be too reckless or hot-tempered at points, getting her into trouble. This character flaw is warranted. Yet I still felt exasperated with her, like, "Fallon, pay attention!"
Both Fallon and Gray had obtuse moments (Fallon had 1-2 more, 😉); and, there is some annoying OW drama, shenanigans of a de-lu-lu girl who is obsessed with Gray and crazy jealous of Fallon [rollz eyez]. Ultimately what made this one lose some smoke for me is dropping the ball at the overall suspense arc, concerning outside enemies of the six-packs. Also, the denial to find-out their possible "mate status," a thing that both Fallon and Gray pussy-foot around, draws out their decision to "be together," making them fuck buddies for too long, with Fallon being the most reluctant, and putting the reader through somewhat repetitive & unnecessary inner-monologues.

If my childhood taught me anything, it was to survive. Now I have a deep-rooted mistrust of people and a wall of steel and ice surrounding my heart. So, when Reed Ryan steps into my life, I know I need to keep him far away. He’s everything I grew up hating. Fighting. Fleeing. Devastatingly handsome, he looks like a drunken regret and has heartbreak written over every inch of his body - literally. He’s the quintessential bad boy...and he’s a cop. But the man is my undoing.

Enjoyed the romance
Revisado: 05-21-24
The romance between Emma and Reed has good initial tension and Reed falls hard and fast for beautiful Emma, with her terrible past, recent harassment, and growing secrets.
Reed gets just beyond Emma's walls, enough for her to let him be around her and tentatively be her main romantic interest but not enough to trust him with a whopper of a secret, one that threatens not only those who Emma cares about but those who Reed loves and protects the most.
It was frustrating with how long Emma remained closed lip and pushed away. Annoying, when all she had to do was reveal the culprit who was a real asshole and got away with too much. And in the end, the bubble bursts anti-climactically.
So in all, the Reed is likable and so is the supporting cast, but Emma is a cross between exasperating and sympathetic. Yet, her decisions and distrust seemed like a moot main conflict, especially when all Reed and others show her for about 60% of the book is that she has indeed found some safety net. The romance was sweet and I loved how Reed loved Emma and his protection of others, but the story dragged too much around Emma's issue, and it would have been more interesting if the fallout had been less rushed, more nuanced.

Protector Hero; damsel in continuous distress
Revisado: 05-05-24
Harper, a young woman from a terrible family, who has abused her, runs as far as she can from them[from AL to TN], after a blow up and learning that her criminal father, who she helped to put in jail years ago, is getting out. Unfortunately, her money and means don't take her far enough; fortunately, she does get as far as Misty Peak, where she runs into a bar, and straight into the interest and protective demeanor of Cody Walker.
Cody, of the Walker clan, who are many brothers (all military, rescue, or lawmen) and 1 sister (Cody's twin, from Liam), stays close to Harper, giving her a job and directing her to a place to stay, until she starts to let him in. He knows he wants Harper, but he also knows gaining her trust and being a support is what he has to start with first. He also has to swallow the pill that he can't stop everything from happening to her, though each time Harper gets hurt, Cody promises "it'll never happen again." UGH
In all, the suspense wasn't well executed, and all of the attacks on Harper and the solution to protecting her from her family were put to rest; however, some elements of it just came either as "no surprise," for the reader, or did not hit the way the author might have intended them to. Plus, the cliched OW drama on Cody's side could have been left out....Really.
It is a typical small town romance, and the characters , not the plot, save it. The Walker clan are ride-or-die, and Harper does not try to run again, after her initial skittishness; she tries to stick with Cody, with what they are growing. Nevertheless, it's formulaic because the ending epilogue is just the prologue to the next Walker brother's HEA story.

Hero needs an HEA
Revisado: 05-02-24
Noah Dalton gives up his honored military career for his daughter. Nevermind that his wife takes his daughter away to live with a man she's been cheat with. Nevermind said wife threatens and plays a despicable "Maury Povich" game when Noah moves to closer to them, in NYC, in order to stay present in his daughter's life!
Because Noah is a good guy, he's a decorated Navy Seal, and he believes in loyalty. And becauses... meets Grace! They both "get" each other on many levels: Grace appreciating Noah for the man he is and Noah understanding what Grace needs and wants.
Their chemistry runs between simmering-to-comfortably steamy, but life gets in the way. Noah has money, legal, and anger problems, and Grace has family legacy, trauma, and rich-girl problems(duty to be married). Both of them cope by finding ways to slake their lust, talk to each other, and build a bond.
Only bonds can be easily broken. Can Noah and Grace win in the end?
This one is a story where the main love-interests are likable. The true friends around them are likable. And the attraction and honesty between them is ripe for good romance. However, the story fails with the conflicts that both Noah and Grace face separately. They were conflicts that were not as insurmountable as they were written to be. I just wanted more power behind Noah's character and more grit behind Grace. Because they both had the means of telling people where to shove it...
It was decent but not wow'ing with depth or action.

If you like Tilikum,...
Revisado: 03-17-24
Though this can be read as a stand-alone, it is enjoyed more for fans who have read at least 1 or 2 books in the Bailey Bros series, or at the first book of this series.
Zachary Haven and Marigold Martin are classic beta characters who get their HEA in this story, Zachary being a younger Haven brother, and Marigold being the best friend of the heroines from the first book and from a book from the original series.
Zach and Mari have known each other from growing up, and the reason why Zach has waited so long to "be with" Mari, who has always had a thing for him, is a reason that in the end was believable but you still wanted to thwack him over the head for waiting.
Mari is soft, very small townish, and ready to have her own HEA, after experiencing the love stories of her close friends. She tries to move on from her heart crush for Zachary and starts to date a newcomer to town, and this is where the the suspense or villain plot comes into play.
The villain plot involves human trafficking/sex trafficking, which is a stark contrast to the usually lighthearted ambience both the Bailey and the Haven family make, with their banter, their grudges, and their squirrel squads, helped by the other characters in the small town, but surprising the need to catch on to and ultimately catch the bad guys took precedence, overshadowing the love story, or let's just say, the "catch the bad guys" plot dragged the love story along with it, like a sidekick.
The narrative performance enhances this decent but predictable small town romance read.

Five years ago, I nearly lost everything. But there was a glimmer of hope on that darkest night. There was him—a stranger I could never forget. Now, I’m finally getting the fresh start I’ve longed for. But when I show up to interview for a nanny position in the small mountain town, the single dad has startlingly familiar blue eyes. Eyes that have haunted my dreams for the past five years. Lawson Hartley is everything I know I can’t have. Older, handsome, and my boss.

3.5 "blue" stars
Revisado: 02-10-24
This was a little of a cross between Overboard (minus the amnesia, minus the trick) and Kiss the Girls (heavy on the sick monster villain, extra heavy on the trauma)
I enjoyed it even though it felt like the elements of the story should not have worked; the nanny trope seemed incongruous with the survivor, tortured woman character that dominated half the story.
🤷🏽♀️ (the light and stark dark of the story kind of gave me whiplash)
Halston Aston was kidnapped by a faceless madman 5 years ago. She escapes and is somewhat saved. Now, a slightly older twenty-something who is trying to get on with her life, Halston applies for a nanny job, which has her knocking at the door of the one man she doesn't see as a threat, but as a savior. Lawson Hartley: chief of police who also liaisons as a search and rescue team member. His startling blue gaze is what she thinks of on that awful day she runs, escapes, and ends up in the arms of a hero.
Yes, Halston, now Hallie, gets away and she gets therapy (all off page). Then she steps back into a life, hoping she can have happiness and live the way she wants, not as a pampered princess but as a normal somebody who earns a living and starts fresh.
TO BE CLEAR, STARTING "FRESH" IS NOT:
1. a job that is halfway across the country, away from her only family, especially when her tormentor never got caught.
2. a job that also happens to be one county over from the place where she was kidnapped and kept in captivity in the first place.
3. a job so close that her employer is the man who saved her: Lawson Hartley.
Because of her name change and Lawson's anonymity as a rescuer, neither Hallie nor Lawson know "the nanny IS REALLY the chief's lost-n-found girl" until they set eyes on each other at the interview. ROLLZ EYES
Then the cutesy nanny-charms-single dad-n-his-three-boys routine commences, especially when Hallie and Lawson's youngest son Charlie interact. And, don't get me wrong, it is all cute, and mushy-good, and great how Hallie fits right in. Like Mary Poppins, only a 25 year old one with scars and trauma.
She hangs out and entertains the kindergarten-aged Charlie, humors and supports the middle-schooler Drew, and she wins over the broody teen-aged Luke, who is his father's minnie-me and sees Hallie for the scarred and vulnerable survivor she is, after he gets over his angst. On top of this, Hallie super cleans....and Hallie cooks great...and Hallie bakes sunshine muffins!
Ugh! She also carries a longing that quickly turns into a giant torch for Lawson. It's hero worship and about insta-love for her and surprise attraction, boners, and restraint for Lawson. He knows she is a broken dove, he's 13 yrs her senior, and he's got some baggage himself.
The tropes in this are abundant: small town suspense, age-gap, single dad, protector hero, nanny romance that comes with a good dose of humor, found family, teenage drama & a bit of young love secondary romance, ptsd, and a villain that gets his 15 mins! {I was really creeped out at times & Lawson coming home to Hallie, the pivot to lightness & family, after finding out the dark encroaching threat, felt off to me, taking a bit of shine off the story, IMO}
Again, it shouldn't have worked, especially as the reader could predict the third act right away. There is "meh" steam and missed opportunity for depth in Lawson and Haley's romance.
But, it worked and some readers will enjoy it, like I did, but they won't roll their eyes as much! Like I did. LOL

I didn't plan on him...or for him. I didn't plan on anything that had to do with Cal Donovan from Boston. Meeting him was a complete and utter surprise, taking me completely off guard. I met new people every single day in my line of work, and none of them affected me. Isn't that just the way of things? You could meet a thousand people, and they'd all mean nothing to you, but then you'd meet that one and they suddenly meant everything.

It started so well...
Revisado: 01-07-24
Ooh I liked this one. I liked their meet-cute; I liked their phone calls, their anticipation, and their willingness to take a chance on each other. But then the hero turned wishy-washy over a small gesture by the heroine, and he turns wishy washy, pulling stunt that I felt like he could not come back easily from. And I was like... WTF? Because I just knew any type of grovel would have to be long and epic for the hero to compensate. And there was not enough time in the novella-like, fast moving story for that, LOL.
I mean, after all that great communication between the two, and their connection, their pivotal second meet up, being that they are a long distance budding relationship, I wanted a better reason for the third act style you-know-what. Or better yet, the story could have gone down the another path, i.e. the couple moving to the next step and then encountering some relationship woes to better see how they could stand.
