This nonfiction book documents the incredible journey of a small group of young Japanese girls who came from from defeated samurai families to America- to Vassar and Bryn Mawr in the late 19th century- then back to Japan where they influenced the development of women’s education there. It is vivid, engrossing and an education in itself.
