Few interesting characters; typical detective story

The story introduced so many characters that it was hard to keep track. Annoyingly, all of the women were talked about mainly in relation to the men in their lives—wives, mothers, victims. The author seemed to bend over backward to ensure that none of the police officers were women, even though a third of the Scotland police are female. This made the characters even harder to tell apart and the story feel more old-fashioned than it needed to be. Narration was very good.

Very little happened for much of the book. I kept hoping for some kind of development or for the story or clues to build. The author was trying for character development rather than plot, I guess, but didn’t make the characters all that interesting. Narration was superb, but I won’t be listening to any more of these.

I kept thinking something exciting would happen, but this is a very drawn-out story of a timid woman gaslit by everyone around her. I get that some women’s lives are like this, but in the 1990s, even in the conservative South, I doubt you’d find a group of women without a spine between them. It does get exciting in the last hour, but it’s a long many hours before then. Turpin’s narration is excellent, as always.

I’ve read most of this author’s stuff, and this is one of the most thoughtful and well written of the bunch.

I liked the unusual small-town setting, but dang, the author threw SO many characters in. Okay, the character has seven siblings. Do we need to meet all of them? And their spouses and kids? I stopped trying to keep track of characters and focused on the plot…which is tricky when you don’t know who is who. Narration is great.

I wanted a series set in a different time and place from my usual US- and Britain-based fare, and boy, this delivered. Very humane characters, rich historical detail, and gentle humor. I loved it and am now plowing through the series, grateful there are many books in it. I was curious about why a British author was writing about Laos, so I looked him up. I highly recommend that everyone do so—a fascinating person, and much about the series made sense once I knew about his life and work in Asia.

I was surprised to discover that this was initially published in the ‘80s. It still holds together perfectly well 35 years later. Narration is perfect.

The dialogue was so stilted that I gave up. Like:
“X,” she said.
“Y,” he replied.
“Z,” she offered.
“A,” he explained.
Too bad, because I enjoyed the premise. And a decent editor would have caught this ridiculous overuse of dialogue tags. Alas.

If, like me, you’ve wondered what it’s like to be transgender, here’s an honest and open and often laugh-out-loud account of one woman’s journey. I hope folks will listen to this and build understanding…but it’s also just a good time.

The only thing wrong with this series is that there are only three books. So entertaining, with perfect narration. I'm not usually a sci-fi/dystopian fan, but this series is just pure entertainment (or given the cats, maybe I should say purr entertainment? I'll show myself out).
