“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Good stories, narrator wasn't for me.
Revisado: 12-03-24
I know everyone loves Will Patton, but I get really tired of him. To my ear, he makes most characters sound insinuating, and often stupid. I despise his attempt at a New England accent. A good set of stories that would have been better read by someone else.

Bernard Samson, the former field agent now stationed in London, is tasked with the rescue. But before he even sets out on the mission, suspicions arise that there is a traitor in the MI6, likely one of his closest colleagues.

Just fine writing. Great characters, great plot.

If your taste runs to Le Carre, you should try this author. Same genre, but good, original, writing. I read most of his books years ago and was pleased to find him on audio and that his work passes the test of time. A really good, sophisticated, cold war, spy novel.

MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan isn’t one to avoid arguments. He relishes them as the lifeblood of democracy and the only surefire way to establish the truth. Arguments help us solve problems, uncover new ideas we might not have considered, and nudge our disagreements toward mutual understanding. A good argument, made in good faith, has intrinsic value—and can also simply be fun.

This guy really believes in winning every argument. As I listened, I realized I'm not on board with that premise. I once read that "At the beginning of any argument, the only certainty is that one or both of you are wrong." This is a much healthier way to argue. One should always be willing to lose an argument if it becomes clear the position they hold is incorrect. In his unwillingness to lose any argument Mr. Hasan treads perilously close to sophistry.

Historia
An “invisible” is CIA-speak for the ultimate intelligence nightmare: The terrorist who, because he or she is an ethnic native of the target country, can cross its borders unchecked, move around that country unquestioned, and infiltrate its institutions with ease. An invisible on mainland Britain was the worst possible news. For Liz Carlyle, an MI5 Intelligence Officer, this report from MI6 marks the start of an operation that will test her to the limit and put her own life in jeopardy.

a well written British spy story.

An enjoyable story, a little slow paced, (something I enjoy). there are some extraneous plot lines which could have been either left out or further developed. No annoying gratuitous sex or violence. I'll try more titles by this author.

Historia
One of the most viewed paintings in American history, Custer's Last Fight, copied and distributed by Anheuser-Busch at a rate of more than two million copies a year, was destroyed in a fire at the 7th Cavalry Headquarters in Fort Bliss, Texas, in 1946. Or was it? When Charley Lee Stillwater dies of an apparent heart attack at the Wyoming Home for Soldiers & Sailors, Walt Longmire is called in to try and make sense of a piece of a painting and a Florsheim shoebox containing a million dollars, sending the good sheriff on the trail of a dangerous art heist.

A disappointment
Revisado: 10-23-20
I have enjoyed the Longmire series, I don't ask much from them and don't pretend they're great literature. This was the first one that really didn't hold my interest and that's all I ask. The plotting was just kind of not there. The mystery was pretty much defined and solved in the last quarter of the story and the rest of it was sort of just some kind of wandering around in the history of Custer's Last Stand. and the history wasn't written well enough to be particularly interesting on it's own.

Good solid spy story
Revisado: 08-17-20
I'm always looking for well written spy stories. I like engaging characters, an interesting plot, some tension, and little gratuitous sex and violence. This series does that well, "Night Heron", "Spy Games", and "The Spy's Daughter" are an enjoyable trilogy, quite well plotted, containing interesting information about China, with a cast of distinguished characters, some likeable, some not. I would recommend giving these a try, (in order, each builds on the last).
If I were to fault them, I think there are series where the personalities and backstories of the characters are better filled out, and perhaps a little more engaging. The series was well worth the three credits.

Revisado: 10-26-19
A lot of reviews pan this book. Well, it certainly isn't Johnson's best, but as a pure shoot-em-up it isn't all that difficult to listen to. I usually expect more from this series, but even without the expected interplay between well loved characters, the action and storytelling is still better than many, many others in this genre. I've wasted a credit on far worse.

This can't be the real Val Mcdermid!
Revisado: 12-25-18
I can't believe this is the same author who created Carol Jordan and Tony Hill. This is little more than a bodice ripper. The story is dull, no real plot, no suspense, a flat out dull ending. But!...It does include a well muscled 'crofter' in a kilt. All it lacks is a couple lines about 'hungry mouths seeking each other', and people being 'pressed to loins' and it could be a best seller destined for the back shelf of any Goodwill Industries bargain section. What happened to the writing that could keep one riveted, with quirky characters, suspense and intriguing details? I loved the Tony Hill series, but it's hard to believe this is the same author. A deep disappointment.

Revisado: 03-29-18
This is a good solid Val McDermid mystery. The end is a little abrupt, but a very enjoyable listen. EXCEPT....A really unfortunate choice of readers. Many have commented on many qualities this narrator lacks. I was most struck by a certain halting quality. He reads as if he can't actually read very well. It wasn't intrusive enough that I gave up on the book, but it certainly diminished the overall story.
