Why do serial killers kill? Out of the Mouths of Serial Killers is as close as you will ever come to discovering the answer...and in the killer’s own words!

Tediously boring without substance
Revisado: 02-12-25
The title does not match the book, as it implies you’ll be hearing from mostly the killers’ side. What the author actually does is include a sentence or two about whatever context she feels like, and briefly goes over the killers’ crimes. It dragged and was boring. It offers no further insight into these people, and read like someone wanting a cash grab with as little effort possible. The narrator was decent though.

Historia
Revisiting Dr. Michael Stone's groundbreaking 22-level Gradations of Evil Scale, a hierarchy of evil behavior first introduced in the book The Anatomy of Evil, Stone and Dr. Gary Brucato, a fellow violence and serious psychopathology expert, here provide even more detail, using dozens of cases to exemplify the categories along the continuum. The New Evil also presents compelling evidence that, since a cultural tipping-point in the 1960s, certain types of violent crime have emerged that in earlier decades never or very rarely occurred.

Historia
Don Miller was quiet and reserved. As a former youth pastor, he seemed a devout Christian. No one would have ever suspected that the recent graduate of the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice was a serial killer. However, when Miller was arrested for the attempted murder of two teenagers in 1978, police quickly realized he was probably responsible for the disappearances of four women. Offered a still-controversial plea bargain, he led police to the bodies of the missing women. Now, after 40 years in prison, Miller has served his time.

Gets very boring
Revisado: 12-29-23
I read/listen to a lot of of true crime. This book took me so long to finish because I was determined not to give up on it. The author wrote out all the details which I usually like, but it was so so boring. The beginning was good though.

Historia
Dennis Nilsen was jailed for life in 1983 after the murders of 12 men and the attempted murders of many more. Seven years after his conviction, Nilsen began to write his autobiography, and over a period of 18 years, he typed 6,000 pages of introspection, reflection, comment, and explanation. History of a Drowning Boy - taken exclusively from these astonishing writings - uncovers, for the first time, the motives behind the murders, and delivers a clear understanding of how such horrific events could have happened, tracing the origins back to early childhood.

This was a completely unexpected powerful and honest read
Revisado: 12-17-22
I'm truly surprised this doesn't have more reviews. I listen to a very large amount of true crime books. Some good, some so terribly biased that I want to roll my eyes throughout the whole story.. But this one was incredibly good. His perspective is so interesting and raw. If he didn't do such terrible deeds, I believe so many people would openly relate to his feelings or truly feel empathetic toward him. I personally still DO feel such as empathy toward all he endured and felt in his life. He did wrong and he deserved to be imprisoned forever, but this story leaves me wishing so badly that maybe he could've found love in a different time, and none of this would have ever happened.
While some parts dragged on, I really could not stop listening. This book leaves me questioning how such a heart could do what he did. And it reminds us in the end, we're all human.

So disappointing overall..
Revisado: 02-13-22
Once again, Santino Fontana puts out a spectacular performance. His narration is so nuanced and polished, and his voice acting is just amazing.
Unfortunately, that's where the praise ends. The first book, You, was so good! The second book, Hidden Bodies was left a bit too be desired but was alright. This book doesn't even feel like it was written by the same author. Most of the book is just a long drawn out push and pull of emotions in their relationship, without the captivation of empathy that a good book will enduce. It finally gets to a climax with about two hours left, and then it just is too much going on. It is as though the author either tried too hard or not at all. And then the very end was so rushed out was almost confusing.
Overall, I hope this is the last in this series. It's played out and redundant at this point. The twists and turns are too bizarre and honestly just not well thought out. I would not recommend unfortunately.

Exactly what you'd expect
Revisado: 04-28-21
First I want to say what an absolute great job the narrator did. He read it exactly how I'd imagine OJ speaking.
This book is exactly what you'd expect from someone who bullies people and never takes responsibility for any of their actions. He's constantly blaming everyone around him but is never at fault for anything. The number of excuses that come out of him is incredible.
Overall it was good. I would recommend.

Good story
Revisado: 04-27-21
The overall story was great. You really felt for the author and all she had gone through. I didn't like how the narrator read the story though. She made everything sound a bit childish and fragmented. Overall I would recommend though.

Couldn't put it down
Revisado: 04-24-21
I bought this book yesterday and just finished it. I found her story to be so heartbreaking and full of hope in the same breath. What an incredible person she's grown up to be, despite her awful circumstances. I usually am not a fan of authors reading their own books, but in this case I feel like only really she could've done it justice. I appreciated how she didn't cover up the hard to hear parts, because it happened and it shows how awful these people were. I also appreciated how she didn't hide the good parts either. It seemed like an honest, therapeutic outlet for her ordeal and recovery.

Historia
“Sam, could you do me a favor?” Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

Not terrible, but hard to make it through the whole thing.
Revisado: 11-12-20
I'm not sure whether it was the writing or the narrator, but the whole tone came across as annoyed and self-important. There were some good parts, but so much was just repeated over and over. He talked about Gacy like a mean girl would. It just bugged me the way he said everything. I understand Gacy did awful things, but please don't just make up thoughts and feelings because you don't like him. Also, if I had a dollar for the number of times he said "John Wayne Gacy" or "welcome to the private practice of law ", I'd be rolling in it.
Overall, I gave 3 stars because there were many parts that were interesting simply from this point of view. It wasn't terrible, but almost.
