Idiotic (spoiler heavy review)
Revisado: 03-17-25
This is one of the most idiotic stories I have ever read. Matt Drake is an incredibly tough guy, making the protagonist of the Doc Savage novel I recently read look like a whimp. With 3 of his 4 limbs debilitatingly injured Drake still attempts the infiltration of an enemy strong hold all by himself.
The book is full of a patriotic fervor and military prowess, to make Tom Clancy blush. To be honest I prefer reading the worst Clancy over another book of Mr. Bentley.

This isn’t the first time I read/listen to this story, likely not even only the tenth time. I love the book for its unique setting. The glamorous racing world of when F1 was still both exciting and dangerous.
So when this new audiobook was announced I preordered it instantly. The reading is quite good, but I wonder if the reader has ever heard if Italian as foreign language, the way he butchers Cagliari or other italian Names is a beauty to behold

Historia
The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

The last of clavells novels for me to discover.
Revisado: 02-20-25
It’s almost ironic, that the last of James Clavell’s novels I “read” is actually the first one he wrote. And to be honest I’m flabbergasted, I never thought there would be another of his novels equaling Noble House, Tai Pan is just coming close. ButKing Rat is impressive, perhaps his very best writing.

Historia
Now a student at Wurthaven, Will is confronted with the truth of the present. The powerful magic embodied by wizards like his grandfather is but a distant memory. Though the practice of the current day is timid and uninspired, Will needs the knowledge that’s preserved and managed by the college. At every turn he finds that sorcery is supreme, while wizards are trained merely to assist and support those who hold the real power - a power based on an evil so deep that few who are living know the truth of its foundation.

The main character was hard to like in the first novel, now he doubled down on stupidity and sanctimonious righteousness. All while being a Mary Sue of the first order.

Historia
'Earthquake country,' said the Professor. 'San Francisco is geologically and seismologically a city that waits to die. Los Angeles is ringed by earthquake centres – seven massive quakes so far. We have no idea where the next, the monster, will hit…' …until a criminal fanatic kidnaps a nuclear scientist and builds his own atomic bombs. If exploded on California's fault lines they could trigger off the mightiest earthquake of them all – killing half its population and dumping the entire city of San Francisco into the sea.

Still my favorite
Revisado: 11-24-24
This is an incredibly biased review, Goodbye California was the first novel of MacLean’s that I read almost 40 years ago, making him my all time favorite author, an opinion still unchanged today. Objectively looking at the story of nuclear blackmail and earthquakes is not the best this master of suspense ever wrote, but to this day it’s thrilling and entertaining. So when this book became available for preorder, I didn’t even listen first the sample but smashed the buy button as hard as I could.
The reading performance is perfectly adequate, and more fluent Than Jonathon Oliver. Some of the voices are a bit to hard to distinguish from each other. And there is on duplicate recording in the last quarter aside from that a very good audio book.

The blandness of the story and attempt to just link science fiction supers structures with info dumps makes it hard to believe this is an established author with many more books to his name.

This was too long and convoluted
Revisado: 03-12-23
I would have never finished finished this book if it hadn’t been an audiobook. I do not finish books that don’t even begin to interrest me in the first 100 pages.
This book seems to have no idea what the actual story is supposed to be. The parts about number theory and cryptology were moderately interesting, the obsession of all protagonists with sex annoying. The whole story elements dealing with Bobby Shafto entirely pointless.
In the second half the book began to be a bit more interesting, but to little and to late.

superb
Revisado: 12-31-20
As a long time fan of Agatha Christie's writing i decided on a whim to buy the mysterious Mr. Quin without reading the the synopsis or even listening to the sample, after all this was read by Hugh Fraser, a man of reading the phone book making it sound appropriate.
The Stories were absolutely stunning, seeing the events appear through the eyes of Mr. Satterswaite a culmination of every literary sidekick ever put to paper. He is much more a man of action than he is even admitting to himself, the eponymous Mr Quin, is actually only appearing in very few lines of the book, but his impact is marvelously felt on every page. I don't want to spoil anybodies enjoyment by spoiling details about the plot, but Agatha Christie does what she always does best, dazzle you with surprises that had been laid out very clearly from the beginning.
I'm not a fan of Miss Marple, but I love Hercule Poirot, but even the great detective is only second Fiddle in comparison to the mysterious Mr. Quin.

Buy both peace talks and battle ground
Revisado: 10-31-20
While I think that it’s unlikely that anybody would start their experience with the Dresden files with this book, I still feel compelled to warn that this is onlyhalf the story explored in peace talks and battle ground. By itself it feels lacking but as the double feature it’s an amazing story and a thrill to experience.
The only negative thing I can say is that marsters has changed his voice for Mab. I liked the previous way better.

Revisado: 10-11-20
I’m very interested in the topic and found the historical descriptions fascinating, but in part this sounded like it was just the sound part of a tv documentary, with the pictures sorely missed.
Kate Mulgrew is a Good actress, but as narrator for this program she felt lacking.
