Enjoyable
Revisado: 06-18-15
Good characterizations, decent suspense with some good twists near the end. Wouldn't say it's the best I've heard, but a good listen nonetheless. Great for sitting in transportation with time to have some fun.

Well written, but...
Revisado: 04-24-15
As with most of Stephen King's work, this book is well written and researched and it really brings you into the character's circumstances. That being said, it's also tedious, and after about 3 long hours you just don't care much anymore. If it had been any longer than 6 hours I would have just dropped it, but I did hang in to the end. All I can say is ...Meh!

Stuart Woods, the best-selling author of L.A. Times and Heat, has created a haunting thriller full of ghostly images, murder and old family secrets. Part detective story, part ghost story, part Southern gothic - this absorbing novel will fascinate listeners as a small town’s present, past and future converge.

Good read
Revisado: 01-23-15
Let's just say it's like having a really good burger - not an extraordinary meal, but very enjoyable and leaves you satisfied. Some interesting twists at the end give the reader a good "ohhh" and just a solid story to keep you entertained. Wonderful performance by the narrator.

Horrible narration
Revisado: 06-10-11
I'm a big Baldacci fan, and not even halfway through part 1 of this book, I am struggling to try to like the story, which I can't even comprehend. The reason being the narration, particularly with the female reader. Every character she interprets comes across as ridiculous and snarky and unlikeable. I found myself hoping someone would just shoot Michelle and put us out of her misery! Unfortunately, as she's one of the main protagonists, I assume that sadly it won't happen. I'm really trying to like this story, I'm really trying to FINISH this book, but at this point, it's not looking good.
I have listened to many audiobooks, and the multiple reader format in general doesn't work well. It takes you out of the flow of the listen. And this one in particular is horrible!! Just as I get into the story, SHE pops up and it's like nails on a chalkboard.
If narration is important in your listening experience, consider this a huge warning. Don't waste your credits. I only hope maybe they will release another version of this book with a single reader. And they should offer it free to those of us who've so sadly wasted this credit!
I consider the one-star rating a reflection on the narration. Sadly, I can't give the writing a star rating as the narration makes it impossible to judge the writing on its merits.

Historia
Grady Adams lives a simple, solitary life deep in the Colorado mountains. Here the 35-year-old carpenter works out of a converted barn, crafting exquisite one-of-a-kind furniture. There's little about this strong yet gentle man to suggest the experiences that have alienated him from the contemporary world. But that is about to change.

Is something missing... like an ending?
Revisado: 12-02-09
I've been a Koontz fan for many years, some stories excellent, some good enough, but this one sadly is neither. After a decent start, some fairly good character development, and a very curious premise, it just ends. Had it not been because I heard the standard "Audible hopes you've enjoyed this program", I would have thought the second part hadn't downloaded. I had to listen to the "ending" three times to make sure there wasn't something I missed, but there wasn't. It just ends. As if deadline time came suddenly and he didn't have time to finish writing. This a dreadful disappointment, especially from such a prolific author. We were invited to the buffet, given a few appetizers, and then sent promptly home. Don't waste your credits, download a free preview chapter of some other book, at least you know there will be more story afterwards.

A truly wonderful
Revisado: 05-16-06
As a fan of Baldacci's other work, this one intrigued me, and I am so grateful I followed that intrigue. This book is beautifully written and so full of heart that you'll wish you were part of that time and place, as Baldacci does such a marvelous job of bringing it to life. Anytime someone asks me to recommend a book, this one is certainly at the top of the list. Also a great choice for teens, superior to the average type of book written with them in mind.

Should have burned in the plane crash!
Revisado: 05-16-06
If you're a fan of mystery novels, this one is so poorly written you'll kick yourself for getting it. If you're a fan of the show Lost (as I am)--the worst episode of Lost is written better than this whole book. And there are no real "clues", so don't bother. It's a good thing Gary Troup went down with the plane, no chance of giving us another bad book like this. If you're a fan of Scott Brick, (as I am) you have to wonder what ever possessed him to read this one. A waste of his talent for sure.

I tried!
Revisado: 05-08-06
I've tried and tried to get into this book, but it just seems to endlessly ramble with descriptions of the characters in the town. While the descriptions are engaging, for the life of me I can't seem to find a story line to follow and find my condentration wandering in mid-listen. I'm really rather torn, since the characterizations are interesting, and in general I feel like I want to like it, but it continually falls short. Definitely not a read for everyone, buyer beware! Make sure to listen to the sample, at least it gives you an idea of what it's like. It doesn't get much more interesting than that. The rather drone-like tone of the narrator does little to help the situation.
