Historia
Cotton Malone is on the hunt for a forgotten 16th century Pledge of Christ—a sworn promise made by Pope Julius II that evidences a monetary debt owed by the Vatican, still valid after five centuries—now worth in the trillions of dollars. But collecting that debt centers around what happened to the famed Medici of Florence—a family that history says died out, without heirs, centuries ago. Who will become the next prime minister of Italy, and who will be the next pope? Finding answers proves difficult until Cotton realizes that everything hinges on when, and if, the Medici return.

Big disappointment
Revisado: 04-22-25
I’ve read most of Steve Berry’s books and enjoyed them for their historical value and faced-paced plots. But not so with The Medici Returns. The writing was overblown and the story was just plain boring. After starting it twice, I returned it.

Only one half a book!

Because it ended in the middle without a plot resolution I felt unsatisfied and disappointed. Otherwise I would have rated it higher.

Historia
When Corie Geller asked her parents to move from their apartment into the suburban McMansion she shares with her husband and teenage daughter, she assumed they'd fit right in with the placid life she’d opted for when she left the Joint Anti-terrorism Task Force of the FBI. But then her retired NYPD detective father gets a call from good-natured and slightly nerdy film professor April Brown—one of the victims of a case he was never able to solve. When April was a five-year-old, she’d emerged unscathed from the arson that killed her parents. Now, two decades later, April is asking for help.

With one dark story line about sexual assault and one about financially based murder in present-day LA, this was the best of the Bosch/ Ballard novels thus far. Fine performances added to the tension-filled, character-driven police story. Highly recommended.

I loved the first in the series, but this book is even better—-a clever mystery with engaging characters we grow to care about. The discussions about love, aging and dementia are heartfelt but with touches of wry humor that keep the mood upbeat.
