A philosophical book with interesting ideas

I enjoy listening to Andrew Klavan's podcasts and ramblings, so I thought I might also enjoy this book.

While I learned a lot about England's greatest poets and found some of the ideas profound, this is not the kind of book I get much from. Why? Mainly because it's a philosophical book-- interesting but that is about all. I suppose I could re-listen and take notes, but I have too many books in the backlog to do that now.

The audio performance by Klavan is excellent. If you've listened to him before, you will think he's conversing with you about a deep, well-thought-out topic.

Makes for a lousy audio book

First of all, the narrator of this book sounds like a robot-- or at best a computer voice, which makes for tedious listening.

While R. Buckminster Fuller may have been a genius ideologue, I don’t believe many of his ideas are very practical. One would think that if there were something to the dymaxion house, or car, or bathroom, these would be commonplace, yet they are not.

Bucky tended to make up words for his innovations, which are sprinkled throughout the book, but instead of explaining these in simple terms, the author also goes out of his way to explain things using 10-dollar words when he could have used 10-cent words and succinct language. Obviously, the man did NOT have an editor!

I only purchased the audio book and will not be purchasing the print edition.

If I could, I’d ask for a refund.

Wow- a Remarkable Memoir

Ben Rich tells the story of working with the brilliant Kelly Johnson at Lockheed. Johnson, Rich and their teams at Lockheed truly accomplished some amazing feats of engineering through hard work and a bit of luck. Anyone who has an appreciation for aviation, science, or technology will enjoy this memoir.

Not a Jo Koy Comedy Routine

I think Jo Koy is funny as hell. I bought this title hoping I would hear 8 hours of non-stop Jo Koy humor. But that didn't happen. To be sure, Jo works in plenty of funny stories about his mom and others, but it's his life story with all the highs and lows (lots and lots of lows in-fact). He's a guy that had to go through a LOT to get where he is today, and this book at least gives you an appreciation for that.

The Shatner Book of Wisdom

It's interesting to get the perspectives on life offered by William Shatner. He's an interesting guy who's done a lot of things, but doesn't take himself or his advice too seriously. The book comes off as fatherly advice and words of wisdom from a guy nearing the end of his life, especially since he narrates it. He's honest about his mistakes and humble about his triumphs. Although the book would be beneficial to younger audiences, I can't imagine them appreciating it the same as I did (at my age).

I wanted a short book to understand crypto-currency and would recommend this as a written book-- but it isn't a great listen. Although I toughed it out until the end, I wished that the book was over about halfway through.
