Historia
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Classic story masterfully performed
Revisado: 04-05-20
The narration makes this title. Tim Robbins nails this classic. Entertaining and captivating. Given the current "Fake News" nonsense, it seems a little too timely.

Historia
The Earth teems with life: in its oceans, forests, skies, and cities. Yet there's a black hole at the heart of biology. We do not know why complex life is the way it is, or, for that matter, how life first began. In The Vital Question, award-winning author and biochemist Nick Lane radically reframes evolutionary history, putting forward a solution to conundrums that have puzzled generations of scientists.

Historia
At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.

Outstanding in every way.
Revisado: 06-12-18
This is a great overview of Fascist dictators past and present. Gives a very good explanation of how these men conned and cajoled seemingly every day citizens into following and supporting them.
Not overly partisan(other than her dislike for Trump)
Madam Albright has a clear voice and is a pleasure to listen to.
I very much enjoyed this book.

Historia
The Discourse on the Method of Reason was the first true work of skepticism, a foundation of doubt which allowed a critical re-examination of all that was previously held to be true. Descartes literally revolutionized both philosophy and mathematics, and this discourse provides the means by which he approached the tangle of contemporary thought and laid the foundation of rational understanding.

One of the worst Narrator I've heard in 40 books.
Revisado: 02-21-15
What did you like best about this story?
This is a great version of the book if you want to sleep. The narrator's voice is a smear of white noise.
How could the performance have been better?
I don't know if you could fix this one. The material is, by its very nature, difficult to follow. Couple that with a monotone reader and it becomes unbearable. I made it half way through the book before giving up and buying the one narrated by James Adams.... Much better!
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not really the Narrator made it impossible to follow.

Historia
Even today, the influence of Ancient Rome is indelible, with Europe and the world owing this extraordinary empire a huge cultural debt in almost every important category of human endeavor, including art, architecture, engineering, language, literature, law, and religion. At the peak of its power, Rome's span was vast. In the regional, restless, and shifting history of continental Europe, the Roman Empire stands as a towering monument to scale and stability, unified in politics and law, stretching from the sands of Syria to the moors of Scotland. And it stood for almost 700 years. In this series of 48 spirited lectures, you'll see how a small village of shepherds and farmers rose to tower over the civilized world of its day and left a permanent mark on history. In telling Rome's riveting story, Professor Fagan draws on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including recent historical and archaeological scholarship, to introduce the fascinating tale of Rome's rise and decline, including the famous events and personalities that have become so familiar: . Horatius at the bridge . Hannibal crossing the Alps during Rome's life-or-death war with Carthage . Caesar assassinated before a statue of his archrival Pompey . The doomed lovers Antony and Cleopatra . The mad and venal emperors Nero and Caligula . The conversion of Constantine The course also addresses one of history's greatest questions: Why did the Roman Empire fall? And you'll learn why most modern scholars believe that the empire did not "fall" at all, but, rather, changed into something very different-the less urbanized, more rural, early medieval world.

Worth the time.
Revisado: 05-17-14
Would you listen to The History of Ancient Rome again? Why?
I will listen to parts of it again. So much to digest. My first real study of the subject. Has me inspired to learn more about the time.
What did you like best about this story?
Speaker is very skilled and weaves a coherent and detailed tour of the time and people. Irish voice is interesting and clear to this American listener. Also skilled at speaking no/very few ums.... or other speech fillers.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Long..... but worth it.
