Historia
Ana and Reid needed a lucky break. The horrifically complicated birth of their first child has left Ana paralyzed, bitter, and struggling: with mobility, with her relationship with Reid, with resentment for her baby. That's about to change with the words any New Yorker would love to hear—affordable housing lottery. They've won an apartment in the Deptford, one of Manhattan's most revered buildings. Reid dismisses disturbing events and Ana’s deep unease and paranoia as the price of living in New York—people are odd—but he can't explain the needle-like bite marks on the baby.

Great story, not what I expected but in a good way. Some good scares, some nasty surprises. Loved it

Historia
When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Good story, uses the n-word A LOT
Revisado: 09-06-24
I really enjoyed this story but I almost didn’t finish it. Really close to the beginning there is a chapter that details a slave auction and the n-word to sentence ratio is extraordinarily high. I understand that this is reflecting the racism of this time period and that it wouldn’t make sense for that character not to use this word, especially in the plot context. Regardless, it was overwhelming. The use of this word calms down after a few chapters but never goes away and, as is to be expected for the antebellum south, the racism is violent and pervasive. I’m surprised no other reviews mention this, so I thought I should say something to warn those who might be sensitive to it.
That said, the vampires are unique and I found the story to be compelling.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Aged like Milk
Revisado: 12-12-22
The story is good and it is sometimes funny but this has not aged well. The casual bigotry sprinkled throughout makes it uncomfortable to listen to, at least for me. Coming from both the characters and the narrative voice, it was hard to find many of the jokes funny when they relied on racism, sexism, homophobia, and fat-phobia. I was quite disappointed by this book as I had heard such good things. Somewhat concerned by the number of reviews here that found this whole book laugh out loud funny as I found a large swaths of it mildly to deeply offensive (see Madame Tracy’s fake Native American “spirit guide” that relied entirely on bad colonialist stereotypes). I get that it was written 30 years ago but it certainly doesn’t read the same today as it may have then. I finished it but I’m left wondering why I bothered.

Historia
In a world where violence in the name of religion can impact so many other people's lives, it's critical to understand the intersection between religion and violence. What's required is not to see religion as inherently violent but to recognize that the violence associated with religious groups and communities is worth exploring and interrogating. In these 24 lectures, embark on a global, multidisciplinary investigation of religious violence. Delivered with honesty and sensitivity to the diversity of spiritual beliefs, these lectures examine the roots of this phenomenon and guide you toward more informed ways of thinking about it.

Violence in Islam
Revisado: 06-08-22
I would like to address some of the criticism I’ve seen in these reviews. In particular, the criticism that the speaker doesn’t talk enough about or harshly enough about violence in Islam. This seems to me to be not at all accurate. In fact, the speaker spends just as much time talking about Islam as they do about Christianity. They do not make excuses for Islamic violence. However, they do try to combat the misconception that Islam is inherently more violent that other religions, positing that Islam has the capacity for both peace and violence, just like every other religion they discuss throughout the lectures. Overall this was a very interesting and informative lecture series.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

This book is absolutely worth every second. It is a brave account of abuse and growth. It’s written beautifully and is absolutely gripping. Be warned: There is a very graphic description of massive injuries in this book.

In Jesmyn Ward's first novel since her National Book Award-winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural 21st-century America. An intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle, Sing, Unburied, Sing journeys through Mississippi's past and present, examining the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power - and limitations - of family bonds.

Be prepared
Revisado: 04-10-18
While I expected this is to be an intense story, I was nowhere near prepared for the reality of it. This book is wonderful. Absolutely fantastically written. The characters are compelling and the voice actors do a phenomenal job. The story goes 100 miles per hour through the whole thing and a lot of the content is very upsetting. If you can handle hearing about lots of violent racism, death, abuse, and drug addiction I highly recommend it.

Back on Earth with nothing more to show for his long, strange trip through time and space than a ratty towel and a plastic shopping bag, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination. But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription, the mysterious disappearance of Earth’s dolphins, and the discovery of his battered copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy all conspire to give Arthur the sneaking suspicion that something otherworldly is indeed going on.

With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
