Historia
Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

The history in this stop well researched The story line drew me in - no one thinks of prejudice experienced by their ancestors, especially if you’re white! WW I and the world pandemic at the same time. The dialogue and thoughts of the characters is authentic and helps you know Gerda’s heart. A great read. And the story narrated by the author is a bonus.

Historia
Abbie Mackenzie dreamed of becoming a fine lady like her aristocratic grandmother, devoting herself to music and art. But at eighteen Abbie found a different dream, turning away from the promise of a comfortable life as a doctor’s wife to marry handsome, quiet Will Deal. Together, they eagerly accepted the challenge of homesteading in Nebraska territory, where the prairies stretched as far as the eye could see, and only the strongest survived for long.

Classic pioneer tale well read
Revisado: 08-11-24
Very historic and accurate pioneer homesteading tale as the author lived in Elmwood (Cedar City) and based the main character on her mother. Anyone that enjoys tales of rural life will enjoy this. I liked the way the story followed her from a teenager through all of the changes of her life.

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

A tremendous heartfelt story. Voices on audio are confusing
Revisado: 01-29-24
I loved the story and parallel timelines. Well written, story flows.
The audio performance was challenging in the early chapters because there were multiple female characters with the same accents, not distinguished when you only have the audio. at one point Jess would be speaking in the first person and then the other female voice also in first person.

Great uplifting story, challenging listen
Revisado: 01-11-24
The is a well- told story and I enjoyed it a lot. The author really brings the story to a lovely and believable conclusion leaving you with an anchor and purpose in the story.
The audiobook is narrated by the voice of a 105 year old man and the voice is raspy and has odd intonations. Later in the book you understand why this was done, but initially the voice is hard to listen to. I slowed it down to soften the crackly voice.
In the end, I very much enjoyed this book.

Wow! Blown away.
Revisado: 12-10-23
I loved the narrator- native Scot dialect. The story is powerful, and the writing takes you on the scene 1500 years ago with painted scenes, smells, touch, feelings, politics of the day that envelope the reader. I couldn’t put it down. I appreciated the historical references at the end by the author. Now I must go there!

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.
