Better than House of God, miles better than Afool Gawande
Revisado: 05-30-24
A new classic in Medical drama... except its true - with perhaps a bit of hyperbole. It covers many of the same themes of "House of God" and is definitely gory and raunchy but somehow it comes across as less offensive and sexist as "House of God". Three cheers for this honest and funny read!

In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort.

Great book, needs more women representation
Revisado: 04-03-24
I loved how this self-help book was structured around a true story of a month-long hunt in the Alaskan Wilderness. It was very engaging.
This book does a lot summarizing of a number of other non-fiction books: The Three Day Effect, Flow, Born to Run etc... It was a good review as I have read most of the works that the author referrences. And that means that its likely not to be bullshit (made up advice) because it was well researched.
I think the author missed a big opportunity in the "carrying" chapter to highlight women. We carry babies inside and outside our bodies. The author could have invited a guest, women to give her perspectives. Its a male centered book, which was still helpful and enjoyable- its just a major limitation of the crafting of it. Its also a bit ableist as it is written on the assumption that everyones bodies mostly work well. He also missed a big opportunity to talk about cold plunging and sort of dismissed it as an instagram trend. As someone with Raynauds and circulation issues (im always cold)- cold-plunging is more accessible to me than turning down the thermostat.
I will recommend this book to friends with the caviat that its inherently sexist and ableist (not maliciously so but coming from the standpoint of privilege).

Imagine a job where you work four days a week and earn as much as the CEO. You also get full benefits, a gym membership, free lunch, and unlimited time off, no questions asked. Hard-won profits don’t just end up in the CEO’s pocket—they’re distributed equally among all employees. The company even buys you your very own car. It sounds too good to be true, but this is the reality at Tunnel Vision, the clothing company that Madeline Pendleton built from the ground up.

Madeline just gets it
Revisado: 02-20-24
This has to be the best book about money I've ever read. Even though I know about personal finance and I feel relatively good about money, this was a very compelling read. Madeline has academic-level knowledge that she has earned from a life that she seems to have lived the hell out of.
I really trust her advice because she seems just as jaded and skeptical about money as I am. It's a personal finance book for people who hate capitalism and money. Thank you Madeline for a great read! It was money well spent!

Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.

Reads like Chat GPT wrote it
Revisado: 12-12-23
This books reads like AI wrote it. It's very general and seems to spew self-help cliche after self-help cliche. I tried to return it but I guess I've exceeded my 2 refunds for the year. I read a lot of self help and this us uniquely terrible - very disappointing - do not recommend.

No notes
Revisado: 08-27-23
I am obsessed with this book. I think I'm going to read it again to pick up on all the foreshadowing. Some of the plot developments were predictable but most were a surprise.
I enjoyed the themes of ablism and accommodation because I have hEDS and I identify with the main character in more ways than just that. I get frustrated that the main character can be so immature at times, but that's about right for a 20 y.o. and I'm looking forward to reading about her emotional growth.
The language and sex scenes did not pull any punches, which I appreciate. But I definitely had to ask the smart speaker to turn the volume low so the neighbors wouldn't hear.
The author judiciously kills off characters, not ruthlessly but also not holding our hands. I guess I don't understand how it's in the dragon-rider schools' best interest to kill off half or more of the students when they are at war. It seems like even a bad dragon rider could at least be used as a messenger or something. That's my only sticking point.
The lore, magic, world-building and mythical creatures are solid with no glaring holes I could identify - but maybe a few things that will need to be tightened up in book 2.
I will definitely be reading book 2!

This tale is dark. Dark.
End was satisfying. It reminds me of Game of Thrones but of course set in Mid-century Asia and no sex.

Sad and Triggering but Obviously well Written
Revisado: 12-22-19
Here's the deal. If you have lost a sibling, a mother, a partner, even a pet, you might find this book awakens your grief. The author spins a complex tail that kept me guessing as to "what the heck happened?!". Also the author describes things in creatively and skillfully. Often felt transported.
