Historia
Against the background of an age that saw the rebirth of ancient and classical learning, Paul Strathern explores the intensely dramatic rise and fall of the Medici family in Florence as well as the Italian Renaissance, which they did so much to sponsor and encourage. Interwoven into the narrative are the lives of many of the great Renaissance artists with whom the Medici had dealings, including Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello as well as scientists like Galileo and Pico della Mirandola.

bad choice of words
Revisado: 09-04-24
Overall, I enjoyed this book which is well-written, however, I take issue with a passage in Chapter 12, Plato in Piazzas, wherein the author describes Pico de la Mirandola thus "... despite Pico having an effeminate appearance, his sexual orientation was very normal." When I heard the narrator read this passage, my ears came to a screeching halt, not unlike the Road Runner pursued by Wile E. Coyote.
It's this example of heteronormativity that sends a message, loud and clear, to young readers, when they may be questioning their own sexuality, that being "abnormal" is bad, and to be avoided. This kind of indoctrination may lead to self-harm or worse when a young person might feel anxious and confused about their attraction towards members of their own sex.
Merriam Webster has multiple definitions for the word "normal", including "occurring naturally", and "within a range considered healthy". So then does Strathern mean to say that being gay is unnatural or unhealthy?
With his exceptional skill with a pen, I'm certain that Mr. Strathern could have chosen a better word without negative connotations.
Words matter.

Historia
Between having a girlfriend, a job, and pretty decent grades, 17-year-old Jules Hatcher is living a perfectly normal life. That is, until he stumbles into Hunter Adams, who is not only openly bisexual, but also notorious for being a player and always getting what he wants. And what he wants happens to be nothing less than Jules. What starts with Jules spilling coffee over Hunter and in turn lending him his hoodie quickly spirals into something much more complicated.

queer choice for narrator
Revisado: 04-30-23
The story is told through the first-person voice of a 17-year old boy so I don't understand why the voice of what sounds like a 44-year old man is the narrator. That seems incongruous and dispelled a sense of the ring of truth for me.

Don’t listen unless prepared to cry
Revisado: 01-19-23
So far I’ve listened to the first and second installments in the series. Looking forward to the third and last one. I’ve lost count of the number of times the story has made me cry due to the author’s excellent skill in describing emotions of the characters and stimulating my feelings of empathy. The plot line rings true with veracity. Glad I discovered these three books.
