Historia
Whale, set in a remote village in South Korea, follows the lives of many linked characters, including Geumbok, an extremely ambitious woman who has been chasing an indescribable thrill ever since she first saw a whale crest in the ocean; her mute daughter, Chunhui, who communicates with elephants; and a one-eyed woman who controls honeybees with a whistle. Brimming with surprises and wicked humor, Whale is an adventure-satire of epic proportions by one of the most original voices in international literature.

Surprisingly gripping
Revisado: 08-22-23
At first, this seems like a very simple tale, with unadorned language, and a straightforward plot. I almost stop listening, but the performance was so enchanting I forged head, and I’m so glad I did! The beautifully interwoven stories and complex character development were surprisingly satisfying. I truly enjoyed every moment.

Historia
Ty Seidule grew up revering Robert E. Lee. From his southern childhood to his service in the US Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth: that Lee was the greatest man who ever lived, and that the Confederates were underdogs who lost the Civil War with honor. Now, as a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, his view has radically changed. From a soldier, a scholar, and a southerner, Ty Seidule believes that American history demands a reckoning.

Historia
It is the winter following the summer they met. A couple, Bell and Sigh, move into a remote house in the Irish countryside with their dogs. Both solitary with misanthropic tendencies, they leave the conventional lives stretched out before them to build another—one embedded in ritual, and away from the friends and family from whom they’ve drifted. They arrive at their new home on a clear January day and look up to appraise the view.

A meditation
Revisado: 06-08-22
The narration and the words and the images the words create are mesmerizing. There’s no real storyline, and there’s a lot of real life that’s not included in this seeming diary of a quiet Irish countryside life, so it’s not an exciting book, but it’s absolutely lovely

Working Backwards is a practical guidebook and a corporate narrative, filled with the authors’ in-the-room recollections of what “Being Amazonian” is like and how it has affected their personal and professional lives. They demonstrate that success on Amazon’s scale is not achieved by the genius of any single leader, but rather through commitment to and execution of a set of well-defined, rigorously executed principles and practices - shared here for the very first time.

Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

A lovely, but hard to follow listen
Revisado: 02-21-21
Perhaps I would have given 5 stars had I listened in an uninterrupted fashion. However, as with most of us, that was not the case, and thus far this is the only story I've found noncohesive. While the narration was entirely entertaining, it comes across as a series of somewhat "fluffy" short stories

Revisado: 02-21-21
This enchantingly performed epic covers multiple generations of linked families. Each tale is gripping on it's own, and the juxtapositions provoke very worthwhile contemplation . By connecting the reader to individual lives, it is able to shatter one's wall of denial regarding the profound, lasting damage caused by slavery in Americal

Who knew math was so fascinating?
Revisado: 09-22-19
This was an interesting story well told, with skilled jumps between time periods and just the right amount of science and historical insertions. The many difficult aspects of being asian, female and a mathemetician were well-flushed out. I thought the personal relationships were a bit cliche, but overall the book was very attention grabbing to the very end

Historia
In a bravura feat of storytelling, Mark Haddon calls upon narratives ancient and modern to tell the story of Angelica, a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship with her father. When a young man named Darius discovers their secret, he is forced to escape on a boat bound for the Mediterranean. To his surprise, he finds himself travelling backward over 2,000 years to a world of pirates and shipwrecks, of plagues and miracles and angry gods.

Historia
The Impossible Climb is an emotional drama driven by people exploring the limits of human potential and seeking a perfect, choreographed dance with nature. Honnold dared far beyond the ordinary, beyond any climber in history. But this story of sublime heights is really about all of us. Who doesn’t need to face fear down fear and make the most of the time we have?

Missed opportunity...
Revisado: 03-26-19
This book could have been better if it contained more about Alex Honnold and less about the author. Alex Honnold was preparing for and performing one of the most significant climbs in history, a climb that seems to have transcended the sport itself. To chronicle this, Mr. Synnott fills a large portion of his book with a conglomeration of articles and talks from his past, as well as common rock climbing history already detailed in many other books and videos. Although Mr. Synnott has pre-knowledge of the climb months in advance, and he has access to Alex before and after the climb, his writing about the climb in the last chapter seems shallow and adds little insight, especially if you have already seen the film. It really feels like a missed opportunity by the author, and it left me as a reader wanting more.
