Deeply researched and comprehensively sourced, Editing Jesus, explores the 8 ways the Jesus of the contemporary church has been edited to fit the spirit of the age. Lawrence writes on:

You sure you want ALL of Jesus?
Revisado: 03-27-25
I agree with his main point: today’s American church wants Jesus to be savior but not Lord. Truly following Him would require us to love all of our neighbors, not just the ones we like.

Historia
Born in Leipzig, Germany, into a Jewish family, Eddie Jaku was a teenager when his world was turned upside-down. On November 9, 1938, during the terrifying violence of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, Eddie was beaten by SS thugs, arrested, and sent to a concentration camp with thousands of other Jews across Germany. Every day of the next seven years of his life, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors in Buchenwald, Auschwitz, and finally on a forced death march during the Third Reich’s final days.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Historia
Where the Light Fell is a gripping family narrative set against a turbulent time in post-World War II America, shaped by the collision of Southern fundamentalism with the mounting pressures of the civil rights movement and '60s-era forces of social change. In piecing together his fragmented personal history and his search for redemption, Yancey gives testament to the enduring power of our hunger for truth and the possibility of faith rooted in grace instead of fear.

A story—- and mirror —- of grace
Revisado: 05-24-24
Phillip Yancey doesn’t just write about grace — he lives it out. He holds a much needed mirror up to his readers’ lives, challenging them (in a loving, almost passive way) to reflect on how their own words and actions either reflect or deny the grace of our loving God.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Steve Berry returns with his latest thriller, a Cotton Malone adventure involving a flaw in the United States Constitution, a mystery about Abraham Lincoln, and a political issue that’s as explosive as it is timely - not only in Malone’s world, but in ours. September 1861: All is not as it seems. With these cryptic words, a shocking secret passed down from president to president comes to rest in the hands of Abraham Lincoln.

More conspiracy theory than novel
Revisado: 11-24-22
This is an attempt to rewrite history by convincing the reader that Lincoln cared nothing about ending slavery and that he had no right to preserve the Union. I have read enough of Lincoln’s own words to dismiss the former as wrong and the latter as irrelevant. Lincoln lied when he said that saving the Union was his only goal. The truth would have prevented or quickly ended his presidency, depending on when he told it.

Historia
Stephanie Grisham rose from being a junior press wrangler on the Trump campaign in 2016 to assuming top positions in the administration as White House press secretary and communications director, while at the same time acting as First Lady Melania Trump’s communications director and eventually chief of staff. Few members of the Trump inner circle served longer or were as close to the first family as Stephanie Grisham, and few had her unique insight into the turbulent four years of the administration, especially the personalities behind the headlines.

Fair and fairly interesting
Revisado: 11-24-22
This book made me more sympathetic to Melania Trump, and just further confirmed that the Donald is committed only to his own wealth and ego. If you’re a Trump fan, you better avoid every book written by anyone who actually worked in “his White House.”

Too sadistic
Revisado: 05-05-22
The hero of this story struggles to not become addicted to the process of extracting information from his victims. I am afraid that some readers (very few, but still some) will be tempted to act out some of the sadism they encounter in this vigilante fantasy.
