As has been noted by many others, the narrator has apparently taken to heart the description early in the book of Augustus McCrae having a loud voice and more or less bellows his every line basically rendering ludicrous any and all of Gus's serious or reflective moments. Gets tiresome after a while. However he's fine in every other respect so to me this is not a deal breaker. This is the only available version and the book suits itself so well to being read aloud, I'm doing my best to put up with this annoying aspect (maybe like you would with an annoying coworker) However it's high time to do a new version! This perennial best seller fan favorite deserves to be upgraded right? It's still a great classic and a natural for an audio-book.

Everyone knows this is the epitome of ghostly gothic writing, but Emma Thompson's performance is something special. She is utterly convincing in delivering James' refined and at times baroque prose. Gives a feeling of vivid reality and emotional power. A stellar performance of a true classic!

got it for free so can't complain too much. maybe you have to read more of the series to get it. but basically one of the worst books I've ever read... the narrator was pretty good although some voices were too campy, but the best narrator in the world couldn't save this meandering pointless shaggy dog haunted house wet blanket...

An American classic. If you don't get it, perhaps you need to live a bit more, sigh... The narration is good, mostly convincing, not just "reading" through the text. However... it's ET-CET-ER-A not EK-CET-ER-A... Even with a couple of grating mispronunciations, this seems to be one of the better if not the best narration choices for this indispensable classic.

narrator took some getting used to but you quickly realize they probably couldn't have found anyone better who could (excellently!) pronounce all the Swedish names, heh. All in all she does a highly creditable job. The novel is first in a series, if you're like me and get hooked on the poetic and slow rich detailed portrait of 19th century rural Sweden you'll probably want to read them all. Deceptively simple, truly great literature. Moberg is a people's writer in the highest sense of the phrase, neither romanticizing his characters i.e. the "peasantry" or patronizing/caricaturing them. Human dignity shines through.

There's a reason this play is one of the lesser known plays of Shakespeare. But it's still Shakespeare, so still magnificent, in all its weirdness and unsympathetic emotional bleakness, heh. But... Burton. The one and only Richard effing BURTON, brings this performance to a magical level. A must have for his performance. He manages to bring life to the supercilious cruel character of Coriolanus! This is the performance to have.

A significant revision of George Long's (superb) Victorian English translation by Duncan Steen. It is generally clearer for modern ears, less antiquated, and here and there 'earthier' than Long's decorous euphemisms while preserving Long's fundamental soundness. I wish I could find a print version of this revision. Anyone know if this Steen version even exists in print?

In college I boldly told my German professor that I wanted to learm German so I could read Thomas Mann in the original. He looked at me, laughed, and said, slightly sceptically, "even *Germans* don't read Thomas Mann". Well here I am all these years later, still reading Mann in English and this time around listening to the new Woods translation (which is great btw). Firstly, since The Magic Mountain is one of the acknowledged masterpieces of European literature. I don't think I need to say much. Those of you who will love reading this novel probably already know who you are and don't need the encouragement of a nobody writing an Audible.com review. I'm mainly writing this review to give an enthusiastic recommendation for the narration(!), which has to be one of the best performances in the entire Audible catalogue! Cool and urbane, exactly the right tone for this subtle and intellectually complex novel but also by turns powerfully expressive, emotionally charged, and really *never* more than completely engaged throughout this seemingly endless universe of a novel. Really first rate. If you have the time to commit to this great and challenging work (did I mention it's lo-oong?) do not hesitate, you'll be richly rewarded.

Narration reveals Melville's poetry.

Having spent some (variously more or less disappointing) time with other versions, I finally landed on the Duncan Carse performance. I heartily second other high recommendations for this version. What a gem! Bolsters my theory that a great narrated performance can add insight even after long experience with the printed page. Carse's voice and delivery is convincingly natural and he seems at ease in this universe and era. Melville's old fashioned rambling sentences are revealed as the alliterative waves of oceanic poetry they often are.. If you've had trouble getting through Melville's wandering endless chapters, try this. Don't be put off by Carse's British accent, He has an old-school(?) way of somehow taking Melville's words seriously and with unconscious dignity, and his voice fits Melville's prose like a comfortable old corduroy jacket.

A minor nightmare by Graham Greene.

Perhaps one of Greene's lesser works, but the intensity and brilliance of his writing shines through. This book is more of a nightmare than a classic spy story, and also reminiscent of of a great old film noir. The sound quality is flawed, it sounds old, but by no means disqualifying. Patrick Tull is one of the great dramatic narrators. He is thoroughly British and his authentic accent may be a barrier for some listeners, but for many of us this is a feature not a bug, heh. Highly recommended!
