I enjoyed the thorough history lesson but was mo
st interested in finding out how every little city and town in America has an Asian restaurant or multiple restaurants. How does this happen? How do people coming from a China or Malaysia or Vietnam end up in Gary, Indiana or Plano, Texas?? Alas, I still don’t know.

I enjoyed the book but it spent way too much time straying from the hidden stories about music, movies and tv in the early seventies - which is what I wanted to hear.

Thought it would explain why there are so many different dialects and accents - i.e., why do people from Boston and New York talk the way they do, why are there several southern drawls, why do some folks from California speak like they do, etc. Addressed that very superficially with most of the book addressing prejudice and discrimination against certain non standard English speakers. Important topic perhaps but not at all what I hoped the would be about for me.

I loved everything about this book

don't understand the fuss

this may be the most disappointing book I've listened to this year. recommended by book critics, friends and colleagues forever. finally got around to it. just not for me. so slow and meandering. totally uninterested in the story. maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough to understand the hype. after all, I'm a huge bill bryson fan.
