Historia
Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.... The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives - presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.

wonderful audiobook, missing at least some text
Revisado: 12-28-15
I enjoy listening to well-loved, often-read books in their audiobook version in order to experience them in a new way, and Anna Massey does not disappoint in this wonderful performance of the classic. However, I was surprised to notice an important conversation in Chapter 18 (Rebecca's phone conversation with Frank) has been truncated. Not sure if this was only a technical error or a deliberate decision.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos.

Fine narration enhances wonderful story
Revisado: 03-09-12
One of the wonderful things about audiobooks is that if well done, they allow you enjoy a familiar book again in a different way. Like another reviewer, I loved this book as a young adult but hadn't read it for a while; Mr. Cosham's excellent narration made the humorous parts funnier, the gripping parts more exciting, etc., as well as deepening the spiritual message of the book. Looking forward to listening to it again.

Almost couldn't finish it...
Revisado: 03-01-12
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
but I did so that I could justify writing a review. This book might perhaps best be enjoyed by the manufacturers of the many products Ms. Stack pushes in page after page. I have never heard so many brand names and web site addresses in my life. I have to wonder if she was paid for product placement.
What could Laura Stack have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I would have appreciated hearing some anecdotes and examples from some source other than her family. Her kids' chore list, their favorite dishes and toys, the cute thing they said at church, etc. Also there was one long list after another, which maybe worked better in print but was a disaster in audio. I think I came closest to deleting the rest of the book unheard when the narrator rattled off an entire grocery store layout.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I actually checked the speed on my iPhone because I was sure it had gotten set at 2X. Nice for getting through the many lists but a major detraction otherwise. There was little variety in her delivery---a touching or humorous story got the same inflection as a list (!) of what to keep in the glovebox. The chapters seem to be divided into many confusing sections and sub-sections, the titles of which all had to be announced rapidly whenever we started a new one. Again, (maybe worked better in print.)
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. Wish I'd saved that credit. Either of the David Allen books, as another reviewer suggested, would be much more useful.

Historia
Sir Stafford Nye's journey home from Malaysia to London takes an unexpected twist in the passenger lounge at Frankfurt: a young woman confides in him that someone is trying to kill her. Their paths cross again and again, and each time the mystery woman is introduced as a different person. Equally at home in any guise in any society, she draws Sir Stafford into a game of political intrigue more dangerous than he could possibly imagine.

Wish I'd checked the reviews
Revisado: 12-23-10
I bought this in a hurry, forgetting that it's her second-to-last novel, or something like that - a meandering, talky, plotless mess, bless her heart. Even the talented Hugh Fraser cannot breathe interest into it. I'm enjoying his sonorous voice as I Christmas-clean the house, but not much else.

When it comes to the holidays, no story brings us back to the true spirit of giving like O. Henry’s classic "The Gift of the Magi". Henry’s gems: "The Cop and the Anthem" and "The Last Leaf", in this holiday collection.
