Ads, ads, and more ads.
Revisado: 12-27-24
The sound quality in this series is surprisingly good. The old episodes include the original ads. To top it off, the presenters of these programs start off each episode with modern ads. These shows, in the public domain, can be found elsewhere without the modern ads!

Poor audio quality
Revisado: 12-27-24
Unfortunately the poor audio quality interferes with the listening experience. One really has to concentrate on everything that is being said as the talking can be muffled. I guess we are lucky to have these old recordings in any form, yet this series needs remastering--or something--to improve the sound quality.

In 1977, two extraordinary spacecraft called Voyager were launched to the stars. Affixed to each Voyager craft was a gold-coated copped phonograph record as a message to possible extra-terrestrial civilizations that might encounter the spacecraft in some distant space and time.

Ann Druyan, stop riding on the coattails of Carl Sagan. Mr. Sagan had a wonderful voice. Your voice is coarse and crackly. Unlistenable. Stick to your strenghts: writing. You're scaring away potential listeners to buy the book instead.

Submitted for your approval - Ten Tales of a Dark Tomorrow, a collection of speculative fiction inspired by the original Twilight Zone series. In the spirit of that iconic, timeless show, these mysterious and gripping narratives explore parallel worlds, faraway planets, dystopian societies, and unsettling reality.

Twilight Zone Lite
Revisado: 12-22-19
Like the Twilight Zone series, the stories in this collection present a number of different genres, many with quirky settings and surprise twist endings. (A couple of the stories I really liked, others were OK but predictable, and two seemed to go on for too long and I eventually skipped over.) What made the Twilight Zone series so groundbreaking, however, was its use of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and other tropes as cover to address serious social issues of the day: prejudice, militarism, mass hysteria, nuclear war, etc. The stories in this audiobook fail to live up to this integral component present in the TV series. Without this element in the stories, it can only be called Twilight Zone Lite. Great narration! I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.

Historia
From an anti-other political climate comes a novel that gives voice to outcasts tyrannized by power. Boy in the Hole is the gripping account of Jacob, a boy wrestling to understand himself, his family, and the world in which he lives as he grows up in the Deep South in the '70s. Emerging from a family of sexual deviancy and alcoholism masked by religion and wealth, Jacob learns to define who he is, but struggles to find the balance between faith and sexuality. To embrace his true identity, he must go on an exodus to face his demons and overcome the pressures to conform.

High Expectations --- Ultimately Unmet
Revisado: 12-07-19
I SO wanted to enjoy this book! To its credit, it is well written. It involves a coming of age, coming out story. It involves a dysfunctional family with eccentric, histrionic Southern "characters." How could it go wrong? Yet, I found the book psychologically shallow, focusing on the disjointed and mundane vignettes of the family, instead of the more emotionally intense issues ( coming to terms with sexuality, mental illness, child neglect, sex abuse). Characters seem to use denial, blame, sarcasm and yelling as ways to dismiss the more serious issues, like a bad episode of "Mama's Family," without the humor. I received a free copy of this audio book for an honest review.

Do NOT buy this if you are expecting MODERN horror
Revisado: 12-06-19
This is not a collection of modern horror stories, as some buyers are expecting (understandable considering the lurid picture the publishers chose for the cover, bordering on false advertising!). These are old classics, written more than a hundred years ago, and are for fans who like the language, pacing, and subtle, atmospheric chills found in these stories---as I do. And at this price (less than 70 cents for over 28 hours of audio), it is a must have for my collection. As in all anthologies, there will be some stories you skip over. There is also a volume 1 in this series, also at an unbelievable price. (There are some problems with the pauses in this audio. Is a pause a cue to tell you that a new story is beginning or is it just a pause in the story you are reading? At other times, there will be no pause between stories. This can be confusing. For the price, I can live with this.) The narration is more than adequate for this bargain selection.

Burglary, Brutality, Buggery, Bloodshed
Revisado: 10-17-19
A very comprehensive overview of the life and atrocities of an amoral, sadistic serial killer. Carl Panzram, a man with apparently no redeeming qualities, started his war against humanity at an early age and died (by hanging), unrepentant, as an adult at age 38. For events that happened in the early 1900's I was surprised at the amount of information the author was able to gather on this little-known killer, from his early childhood through his death. The causes of his pathologies are a little vague (nature/nurture?), but since he was never really analyzed, this book may be the most we will get on what made him a creature of evil incarnate. The narrator was excellent for this dark subject matter. I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Historia
Detective Harvey Sam's training at The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children prepared him for the most important case of his career to date: the abduction of eight-year-old Gabriel Wheeler. Nothing, however, could prepare him for the boy's blame-shifting mother from hell who shoots up instead of alerting police when the boy goes missing. Nor is Harvey equipped to deal with the heartbreak when his girlfriend leaves him on the same night, taking Effie, the nonbiological young daughter Harvey adores.

Unrealistic characterizations of adults
Revisado: 10-17-19
This author takes a serious subject (child abuse and neglect) and turns it into an episode from the Jerry Springer show. Many of the adults come across as over the top, superficial stereotypes of trailer trash, including spousal and child abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, prostitution, a sadistic Elvis impersonator----and that's just describing one couple! Then, when the young child is kidnapped from this "home" and forced to live with a crazed killer, it begs credulity. A lot of eye rolling on my part as I listened to this audiobook. The narration was very good; unfortunately the story was not. I received a free copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

Bland Narration
Revisado: 10-17-19
Based on the topic and the high ratings, I began this audiobook with high expectations. I tried to finish it at least five times but found no stories that held my attention over the painfully monotone delivery of the narration, which sapped the stories of any drama or excitement. Perhaps I would have enjoyed this collection with a different narrator or if I had read it on my own. I received this audio book for free in exchange for an honest review.
