Sharp 'fangs', but low 'stakes' ;)

A satisfying continuation of this fun-as-hell series, though it feels like the stakes are lower than in previous entries. Going from fighting a whole dimension of vampires bent on domination to a hit-job on one half-vampire with delusions of grandeur feels like a step down. But I suppose this one is more a character study of Harry the Necroscope. How a character with incredible superpowers copes when they've been ripped away, and that's pretty satisfying to watch, as Harry Keough is a hard character to sympathize with at his full god-like powers. Seeing that even the great Necroscope can have a bad couple years gives the rest of us a shot, lol!

Classic Pratchett , always clever, warm, and engaging. If the Wee Free Men aren't thoroughly in your heart by the end of the story, it's because you haven't got one.

Not what I expected, but better for that.

I bought this book expecting a cheap horror novel, and got excellent fantastical realism instead.
My only real complaint is a spoiler, but a certain character death came off as cheap and exploitative, and feels downright unnecessary, as if it were added last minute in a later draft. It's the only reason this isn't a 5 star review across the board.
That said, I love the monster, the mythology, the characters, the wild folk magic, and the bizarre denizens of Fear County, plus the war the reader brings them to life with a PERFECTLY chosen voice for this material.
also, this book has one of the best "Hell YEAH!" moments I've read in a LONG TIME.

Pretty standard monster movie/potboiler fare.

Overall I feel like this is one third of a better novel. Making this a series is a mistake. Ironically enough, I'm not that excited for a trilogy of "man vs the giant spider" novels. The idea...well, it doesn't have legs.
A fun couple hours that suffered from a lack of imagination and an over-abundance of self-importance. This story could be done better.

Better than the first!

Spends less time establishing the world and allows you to jump right in, like any good comic book.
The finale of this one isn't as action packed as the first, but the new characters are worth it. looking forward to picking up part 3.

Slick and more fun than you'd expect

More than a Jaws rip-off by a mile. the stories and people in this book are great and show a very smart writer working thr genre just right.
Only criticism comes with the human villain. he really feels like he belongs in another story. Evil people are out there, sure. But this level of cartoon character evil becomes a little bit ridiculous.

Awesome! A wild concept executed with style

You wouldn't think this concept would work. it sounds stunt-y and like the cash-in idea of a hack. "Gee these two things are popular, let's crap out some schlock."
But then you read it. And the heroes are human and complicated, the setting unique and creative, the prose fun and alive. The story isn't about superheroes vs zombies. It's about hope vs fear. Highly recommended, can't wait to read this whole series.

Joe Hill only gets better.

This book is by far the best story about a bad-ass biker mama fighting to save her son from a innocence-draining immortal maniac that you'll ever read.
This isn't damning with faint praise, simply a statement on what a wonderful, unique, literally and figuratively fantastic adventure this novel is. And read in a way that moved me, frightened me, and kept me anxious to get my headphones back on.
This cannot be over stated: Kate Mulgrew is PHENOMENAL. Her voice is so nimble, her characterization so complicated and complete, that Charles Talent Manx came so alive as to make my blood run a little colder. Everyone else is read great too, but her reading of Charlie deserves an award.
Read this book. Listen to it. Live with these beautiful, flawed, compelling characters for a while. Share their ups and downs, their tragedy and eventually- their Triumph.
