What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
To be a leader, its more of what you do and less of who you are
Any additional comments?
Written by Bodo Schäfer and narrated by Troy W. Hudson. In this audiobook the writer, Bodo Schäfer tries to explain the leadership role, he makes use of a fictional company and its managers to do so.
The book follows the managers’ encounter with Louis Berg, who was a high-performance sportsman in tennis. Louis’ approach to life was ‘eat or be eaten’ until he was involved in an accident that put him in a wheelchair. He overcame the challenge and went on to become a successful sales manager and then a management consultant.
One of Louis Berg’s first quotes was “The ability to lead is the difference between success and failure and thus between a fulfilling life and frustrated mediocrity.” He pointed out to the managers that leadership was about what a leader should do and not who a leader should be. This solves the problem of trying to be someone else, which is near impossible, instead of doing certain things the person did.
To do what a leader would, “there are five tasks which must be fulfilled, five tools to carry out the tasks and five principles which are the foundation of long lasting success.”
Louis describes the role of a leader as:
The what; five tasks
The with; five tools
The how and why; five principles
The tasks make work measurable, enable control, give security and orientation and are the basis for effective communication.
The tools help to accomplish the tasks, enable efficient work, offer leverage: economical and time-saving; Lead to effective leadership through exercise.
The principles show how to perform tasks, regulate the direction of the company, give focus and form the heart of the company, their conscience; they enable an independent company culture. They give the sense of work, build pride in the company and create an identity.
Leading simple is a system for the whole company and not just for the "executives". I like the simplicity and clarity with which it gives insight into the role of a leader. Even though the author is German, the book as a different style to it, and I definitely recommend it.
