Juvenile to the extreme

I am a big fan of this author. I loved the first trilogy starting with Otherlife Dreams. I also enjoyed Right of Retribution, Monster Mercy, and Swing Shift. This, however, was just horrible. This is the worst offering from this author I have seen to date. I am not going to return it. Everyone is entitled to an utter miss. Not every book can be great. Nonetheless, I can't in good conscious recommend this title. The main character is an idiot. The supporting characters are weak. The plot is all over the place. Save your money and your credit.

I get that when you have a good franchise going that you want to expand it so the greatest number of people can enjoy it. We started with Monster Hunter with Owen and Earl and it was an instant classic. Then along comes Monster Hunter Memoirs. Who doesn't love Iron Hand! However, Julie just needs to remain a supporting character. She is a fantastic supporting character. However, she is a supporting character. You would think that a mother who had her child abducted by monsters would be an adrenalin ride - nope. Just lacked any real sense of urgency. Sure, the character says all the right things. However, if you have to tell me that things are dire and the situation is urgent then you missed the mark. Women can make great Monster Hunter lead characters. It was done in the short stories successfully. Stories like this were pulled off wonderfully by numerous authors. I have over a thousand audiobooks and hundreds were this was done well. It just wasn't done well here.

Interesting male protagonist

Yeah, it is a harem fantasy novel. That is kinda Mr. Arand's bread and butter. He spends more time in character development than most authors that write the harem. Thankfully. This male lead is certainly interesting. He is rather dark in the psychological sense. In layman's terms, we are dealing with multiple personality disorder. The leading male protagonist has a history of killing - lots. However, he is something of an antihero in this story. Worth your money if you like a good fantasy story, harems, or anything else done by Mr. Arand.

We need all Nisi Oisin's works.

There a layers of meaning in what the characters say throughout the series. The performance is very well done by the cast of narrators. Hopefully, we will see more of these works brought to Audible with the same level of care.

There isn't a lot of what I consider good stand-up comedy on Audible. However, I am a career military man in his late 40s and I thought that this title was hysterical. Good job Mr. Pinette and thank you Audible for putting this one out for us.

Not as good as book one.

If you have followed William D. Arand starting with Otherlife Dreams, you know that his series overlap. This is interesting and enjoyable for the fans. The leading male protagonist in Monster Mercy 1 & 2 has considerable potential. He is a very colorful character. However, I felt that in this sequel he was overshadowed by his harem and defanged and declawed. He wasn't as strong as he was in the first book. That doesn't mean that the book wasn't enjoyable. It was entertaining. Mr. Arand does a good scifi story and has a flair for harems. If you are a fan than it isn't a bad pick. It just isn't as good as the first book and the male protagonist was disappointing.
