Historia
The galaxy is still reeling from the recent incursion of the Destroyers, an all-too-real enemy that more than lives up to their name. With another strike looming on the horizon, humanity leads the charge to uncover the secrets of subspace—a technology in widespread use across the galaxy but truly understood by no one. The race is on for the scientific breakthrough that will save the Milky Way.

Modern, yet classic.
Revisado: 01-03-24
Caveat: The author is an acquaintance, but I didn't know what to expect. I bought it out of support and curiosity, and a love of science fiction, both new and classic. I finished it a fan.
This has the lexicon of a modern work, yet has the feel of classic sci-fi. The general universe-building sets the stage for an amazing central twist, while you feel the microcosm of the characters and their personalities are genuine and relatable. The plot, species, and details are original without being esoteric or too unfamiliar.
It's not framed as an epic and doesn't take itself too seriously but there are no regrets -- it's solidly pleasurable. If anything, it leaves a want for more, and thankfully two prequel vignettes are included. If it were a TV show, you might not feel the end of the season was very climactic, but you'd be peeved if they canceled it without hope of another season.
And the voice acting? I know the voice actor, but he does it so well and entertainingly that I saw and felt the characters and not him. He was more versatile than any other book narrator I have yet heard. The various voices and accents were memorable and sounded authentic, and oh-so entertaining. Also, the background effects were just right.

Historia
Isaac Stanfield leaves his home to become a sailor on a merchantman, the Sweet Rose, and through ingenuity and sheer luck, finds himself in the middle of the drama and explorations that precede the departure of the Mayflower for New England in 1620. Exploration is Isaac's coming-of-age story, capturing the turbulence of the times through his observations and experiences. Suspenseful, poignant, and expertly researched, David Tory's novel brings to life an engaging cultural history of English seafaring exploration and intrigue in the early 17th century.

Exceptionally Good Historical Fiction
Revisado: 11-19-22
Exploration touched every level of my being - intellectual and personal. I felt deeply invested in the adventures and development of the characters. It made me stretch my knowledge of the times and opened a mature understanding of things glossed over in history class.
And I was surprised how good a choice it was for the author to narrate the book himself. I can't wait until his next book.

Historia
The fourth volume in Will Durant's Pulitzer Prize-winning series, The Age of Faith surveys the medieval achievements and modern significance of Christian, Islamic, and Judaic life and culture. Like the other volumes in the Story of Civilization series, this is a self-contained work, which at the same time fits into a comprehensive history of mankind. It includes the dramatic stories of St. Augustine, Hypatia, Justinian, Mohammed, Harun al-Rashid, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, and many more.

Incredible Reading
Revisado: 12-22-21
Durant's lifetime of research is obvious in this epic work, covering every angle and aspect of a bar and complex history.
And I don't think any other narrator could have given this multilingual treasure a more fitting voice.

Historia
A work of striking originality, The Human Condition is in many respects more relevant now than when it first appeared in 1958. In her study of the state of modern humanity, Hannah Arendt considers humankind from the perspective of the actions of which it is capable. The problems Arendt identified then - diminishing human agency and political freedom, the paradox that as human powers increase through technological and humanistic inquiry, we are less equipped to control the consequences of our actions - continue to confront us today.

Amazing
Revisado: 08-06-21
Hannah Arndt is truly one of the most brilliant philosophers of the 20th century. The Human Condition was a work used in a course I took as a philosophy major many years ago, but worthy of a college course in itself. I will have to revisit it a third time to plumb further depths.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

A bit more on the scholarly side than I expected but very usable with many eye-opening ideas. Found it very enlightening. Amazing, passionate narration.
