Historia
"Good people, I am come hither to die, and by a law I am condemned to the same." These were the heartbreaking words of a 17-year-old girl, Lady Jane Grey, as she stood on the scaffold awaiting death on a cold February morning in 1554. Minutes later, her head was struck from her body with a single stroke of a heavy ax. Her death for high treason sent shock waves through the Tudor world and served as a gruesome reminder to all who aspired to a crown that the ax could fall at any time.

A Tudor history book that I finished easily.
Revisado: 07-21-21
I’m really interested in British medieval history, but sometimes the books I listen to are dry, and I have trouble finishing them. This book was definitely an exception, I looked forward to coming back to it each day. I’ll probably look for more titles by this author.

Best Donner Party book yet.
Revisado: 07-14-21
I’m fascinated by the Donner Party, and I thought this book was excellent. There are details about the lives of the party members that I had never heard before, and I got through it quickly and enjoyably.
Some people seem to dislike the author’s narration, but I actually thought it worked really well for this story.

Historia
In this vivid, deeply-reported book, Matt Stroud shows that our new policing tools are overhyped and ineffective. Instead of wrestling with tough fundamental questions about their work, police leaders have looked to technology as a silver bullet, and stood by as corporate interests have insinuated themselves ever deeper into the public institution of law enforcement. With a sweeping history of these changes, Thin Blue Lie is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand how policing became what it is today.

Historia
In the tradition of Orange Is the New Black and Jerry Stahl's Permanent Midnight, Amy Dresner's My Fair Junkie is an insightful, darkly funny, and shamelessly honest memoir of one woman's battle with all forms of addiction, hitting rock bottom, and forging a path to a life worth living.

I listened to this book in less than a week, and I liked it a lot. Amy is charismatic and entertaining, and she also did a great job narrating (her voice reminds me Laura Prepon). I’m fascinated by drug addiction and I love female hot-mess biographies, and this is a good one.

Historia
It was never supposed to be this close. And of course she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the tragic story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgment about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Hillary's campaign - the candidate herself.

A great listen.
Revisado: 04-27-17
I've been dying for Mark Halperin and John Heilmann to write a Game Change book about this election, and Shattered read just like what I would imagine it would be (minus details of the Trump campaign). This book is engaging, narrative, and the author seemed to have great behind the scenes access. I also appreciated that the author didn't inject opinion or partisanship either way, it was very factual and unemotional. The narrator was great, too.

Historia
On June 9, 2008, the butchered body of Travis Alexander was found in his Mesa, Arizona, home. The grisly nature of his death made instant headlines: With 29 knife wounds, his throat slit, and a gunshot to the head, Travis was left to die. The prime suspect in the case was Alexander's ex-girlfriend, the attractive and soft-spoken Jodi Arias. Though Arias initially said that she was nowhere near the scene of crime, little about this case was as it seemed, and before long she had been caught lying to police. As the investigation progressed, her lies evolved multiple times before finally resting on an appalling claim: She had killed Travis in self-defense.
