The Early Middle Ages-the years from A.D. 650 to 1000-were crucial to Europe's future social and political development. These 24 lectures trace a journey from Scandinavia across northern and central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Byzantine and Islamic empires, providing an exciting new look an era often simply called the "Dark Ages."

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Explore the dramatic interaction between Judaism, Christianity, and paganism in Rome from the 1st to the 6th centuries. Why did pagan Rome clash with the early Christians? What was it like to be a Jew or a Christian under Roman law? And how did Christianity ultimately achieve dominance in the Roman Empire?Over the course or 24 lectures, Professor Harl enables you to grasp the full historical sweep of this critically important era and its key figures.

Absolutely fantastic!
Revisado: 09-02-16
What made the experience of listening to The Fall of the Pagans and the Origins of Medieval Christianity the most enjoyable?
This is a fantastic course that deals exactly with the subject described in the title. How has the process that transformed de mediterranean pagan world into a Christian empire that set the bases for the medieval western tradition?
Who was your favorite character and why?
Filled with great anecdotes that illustrate the lectures.
What about Professor Kenneth W. Harl’s performance did you like?
The presentation is very clear. Interesting and extremely well documented. The professor is very passionate about the subject. At the same time he delivers perfectly understandable explanations of the historical processes that led to this cultural and religious transformation.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's simply great. One of the best great courses I've done.
Any additional comments?
I absolutely recommend this course to anyone interested in the subject.

The worst Great Courses I have ever done
Revisado: 12-03-15
Would you ever listen to anything by The Great Courses again?
Yes
Any additional comments?
This is a very long and tedious course about a fascinating subject: the middle ages.I have done lots of courses by the Great Courses and I generally love them all. Even when I have done several courses on the same subject but by different professors. Not this one. I didn't like the Professor's approach. I didn't like the fact that it sounds like she's reading all the time. She lacks the ability to make the course interesting. It is very long, (which is not necessarily a bad thing, but in this case it does not help), it covers a wide range of subjects on medieval history, life and culture, and even though some moments are better and some chapters (two or three) not bad, the whole course was for me very uninteresting and boring, a real shame since I love the subject and was looking for a course precisely on all the topics covered in this one.

Historia
Large numbers of atheists, humanists, and conspiracy theorists are raising one of the most pressing questions in the history of religion: "Did Jesus exist at all?" Was he invented out of whole cloth for nefarious purposes by those seeking to control the masses? Or was Jesus such a shadowy figure - far removed from any credible historical evidence - that he bears no meaningful resemblance to the person described in the Bible?

A great work by the fantastic Bart Ehrman where he gives detailed account of all the evidence for the historicity of Jesus, against the "Myhthisist" point of view. Exactly the kind of study I was looking for. Many thanks to Porf. Ehrman for this work. The narrator is excellent.

Historia
The Middle Ages harshly tested every aspect of human perseverance, imagination, and survival. Living conditions were squalid for almost everyone except the ruling elite, and most of the riches of Western culture were preserved in monasteries and on other continents. And into this setting came widespread famines, prolonged wars, and plagues that marked Europe's late medieval period as one of the most harrowing in recorded history.

A great professor, a very good course
Revisado: 11-06-15
Any additional comments?
This is a great course about the end of the middle ages and the beginnings of the renaissance. On the one hand it is a complicated and complex matter, there are many things to cover so it's kind a big summary on a very specific but rather big subject. This is no a story of names of kings and wars, but instead it is a very interesting approach on how society was changed, how the human mentality of middle ages was transformed in many aspects: social, cultural, economical, political, philosophical, etc. Prof. Ruiz is fantastic, very moving, emotional, telling many great stories and anecdotes. So you will not only learn about history, but also about many great writers, thinkers, philosophers and books that are to be read and known for personal development. This is more than a course of history, it is also a course of culture. The best is the personality and passion of the very great Prof. Ruiz. Thanks to him for all his devotion and clarity.
