Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

How can this be better then the first book?
Revisado: 01-16-24
Don't get me wrong, I love legends and lattes. But, in the last year I have also started working in a library, so this book hit extra hard.
The focus here on a younger Viv is fantastic, and it does an amazing job of showing the reader how she became the person she is in L&L, however, what this book captures more then anything is just how powerful novels and a love of reading are, and that is just wonderful.

All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.

An epic sequel
Revisado: 05-31-23
Honestly I will be shocked if these two books are not optioned for TV show adaptation already.
This book takes everything that the first book did, and doubles down. I particularly love the descriptions and examinations of the other cities which makes for such a powerful and epic story.

Legion Selection will test every fiber of her being, heaping on endless trials of pressure, stress, and pain. Most candidates quickly find their breaking points, while others are merely broken. Just a gory excuse to be grim dark sci-fi
Revisado: 04-25-23
Who is the audience for this novel?
It seems at times to try to push some anti-patriarchal ideas, but never comes good on them.
The fact is that this book is needlessly gory. If this wasn't a prequel book I would hope that there was some message about how "the best" military force in the galaxy shut itself down because they weren't "men" enough to accept women in the ranks. Instead the story goes into some eugenicsesqu crap at the ending as a cliff hanger.
I have the first Galaxy edge book downloaded, but probably will not listen... not worth the time for something that is rife with toxic masculinity as hard as it tries to sound like it is not.

A disappointing ending
Revisado: 12-20-22
I have plenty I would want to say about the author, but this is not the time or place for that.
Instead it is a place to examine how disappointed I was with this book. The story doesn't really have anything interesting going on, and the extremely smart characters make terrible choice simply because they need to, in order to move the story forward.
Overall I was bored, as not a lot happened, and nothing was resolved.

Trigger warnings:
Violent possibly nonconsensual sex (1 scene)
A dog is killed in a horrible manner: drowning/stoned
General violence
I really enjoyed this book, especially the non linear nature of the storytelling.
I don't really like the second narrator Jack Crow, specifically how he treats women. But the Felix story hooked me and the mystery of Felix kept me listening even after a problematic sex scene.

Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city's ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

Cute and Wholesome
Revisado: 08-09-22
What I love about this book is that it is really just a story about a person making a new life for themselves, and meeting exactly the right people to make that life a reality.
There is a heavy essence of queerness as well, but it is treated as normal which makes this story stand out as it shows a world where being queer is not a challenge and instead is just considered normal.

Trigger Warning: SA, R, T
Revisado: 07-01-22
Trigger warning: Sexual Assault, Rape, Torture
I really liked the start of this book. Imaginative clear magical world without so much of the over explanation you see in a lot of fantasy set during modern times. The character was interesting and engaging even if the main plot was a little dull.
The issue comes at the 3/4 mark of the book. At this point death sees the soul of a boy who has been raped by an adult woman in his family. The character then goes to assume that the child was a willing participant because he is male. This is grossly problematic and honestly made me question if I wanted to finish the book or not.
I decided to keep reading as I thought that that part of the story was over (it was not entirely). However, other stuff started becoming obvious. After this point in the book a character who had said she "had sex with a demon" is referred to as being raped, this same character is then tortured in a sexual manner later in the book.
Everything that this book was trying to achieve could have been handled without this reliance or sexual assault.
Although I liked the writing and story telling in the first 3/4th I would not recommend this book.

Historia
At the age of 13, Pella Marsh emigrates with her family to the Planet of the Archbuilders. These enigmatic aborigines have names like Lonely Dumptruck and Hiding Kneel, and a civilization that baffles and frightens their human visitors. As the spikily independent Pella becomes an uneasy envoy between two species, Girl in Landscape deftly interweaves themes of exploration and otherness, loss, and sexual awakening.

Historia
In his beloved classic, Acting: The First Six Lessons, master acting teacher Richard Boleslavsky presents his acting theory and technique in a lively and accessible narrative form. Widely considered a must-have for beginning as well as established actors, Boleslavsky's work has long helped actors better understand the craft of acting and what it takes to grow as an artist.

Not worth the undercurrent of Misogyny
Revisado: 06-24-21
I did finish this book beyond my better judgement. Great narrator, but the author insistence on calling the young actress "the creature" does not convey the "adoration" I think we are meant to take from it.
Other acting texts cover these same idea and I would encourage actors (both young and old) to look else where for their "first six lessons".

Doesn't Hold Up
Revisado: 03-02-21
I loved this book as a teen... but now with books like the stormlight archives and the Mistborn saga, Amber just feels dated and flimsy.
This book isn't really worth a credit, if it was the first five books or all ten then yes that's value... you can spend your credits better elsewhere.
