Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

Gretel Fernsby is fierce and fantastic
Revisado: 11-29-24
I picked up this book with reluctance; I was not enamored with The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. But my goodness, this book more than compensated for my disappointment in its precursor. Gretel Fernsby is fierce, in turn both loathsome and deeply sympathetic. She and her incredible story was fascinating and memorable. Her circumstances were thought-provoking and her story stirred so many emotions.

Historia
To Paradise is a fin de siècle novel of marvelous literary effect, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love—partners, lovers, children, friends, family, and even our fellow citizens—and the pain that ensues when we cannot.

Strange and ambitious, terrifying and lyrical
Revisado: 01-13-23
So richly layered and dense. Compelling and elegant and magnificently thought-provoking. Variations on themes playing out through different times and places to create a symphony of the human condition.
