A masterful end to the series. I like how the story ended well enough but am left wanting more. But, that's what you might expect from the lived in, historical world Mr. Kutscher has carefully created for Gereon, Charly, Fritze, etc.. I reckon many of the questions one might ask the author are answered in the final minutes of the book leaving you to feel what his characters feel--standing on the edge of an uncertain future.

A Deeper Look At Colonial History

As someone who has gone through graduate school in the subject of history, I found this book quite refreshing as it challenges the dominant narrative found in academia today while at the same time acknowledging that colonial history contains stories of racism and oppression. this work is well researched and well written. As someone who believes in heterodoxy in academia rather than the orthodoxy which continues to grow, I wish more people would reas this book.

Absolutely Splendid

I really enjoyed understanding the evolution of the secret service during the 1950s and into the 70s. I really gained a respect for LBJ I never before had.

A brilliant survey of Albert's life.

As an American, hearing this books has been great in keeping up with my German. I've also learned one or two umgangs spruche to this point. I've liked how Gereon has evolved as well and Charly, and I'm excited and nervous for what happens to them in the next few books. This book set the stage for some different conflict in the future.

In this book, there were enough plot hooks to keep me engaged and I found myself really looking forward to the times where I could listen and dive into the interesting, but stressful world of Gereon Rath's Berlin.

A Great Follow Up to Goldstein

I really enjoyed this book thanks to the various locations we followed Gereon to. I liked learning more about Eastern Prussia and the delicate situation they were in between WWI and WWII. Gereon continues to a a likeable, if not sometimes frustrating hero. And David Nathan's narration could not be better. He's a master with the various accents and is the reason I prefer to listen to them in German rather than read them.

An Excellent and Interesting History

This book is a much needed survey of one of the most important in influential dynasties in European history. Especially for Americans who wish to look beyond the British and French dynasties. My interest in the book was piqued as I had once lived in Vienna where I learned German and visited the Schoenbrunn Palace and the Imperial Crypt. I was interested in the Habsburgs but never dove deeper into their history more than the 18th century. Once, while living in southwestern Germany along the Rhine, I noticed the Austrian flag above a medieval city gate and learned that the town, Waldshut, had once been a Habsburg possession. This book helped fill in the gaps and illustrate how big the Habsburg holdings were. Martyn Rady managed to bring dimension and life to the principal figures whilst maintaining a steady march through the history at a good pace.

An exciting and engaging book

Mike Rowe had a way with words. A way that makes you love being literate. If you've listened to his podcast, you may hear some of the same stories, but he offers a whole new insight into his life after the story. Insights that are fun and interesting. If you're a fan of Mike Rowe, you're sure to love this book.
