Historia
Soviet Russia, 1930. Zuleikha, the “pitiful hen,” lives with her brutal husband Murtaza and her mother-in-law in a small Tartar village. When Murtaza is executed by communist soldiers, she is sent into exile to a remote region on the Angara River in Siberia. Hundreds die of hunger and exhaustion on the journey and over the first difficult winter, yet exile is the making of Zuleikha. As she gets to know her fellow survivors, Zuleikha begins to build a new life far removed from the one she left behind.

And, oh, the writing.
Revisado: 10-19-21
A beautiful story, yes but it’s the writing that picks you up and transports you directly into Zuleikha’s experience. Reading Guzel’s work is like reading a movie.. the sights, sounds, smells….every sense is pricked. I lived this book….I was actually there, breathing the same cold air. Don’t miss it.

Historia
Following her retirement from Princeton University, celebrated historian Dr. Nell Irvin Painter surprised everyone in her life by returning to school - in her 60s - to earn a BFA and MFA in painting. In Old in Art School, she travels from her beloved Newark to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design; finds meaning in the artists she loves, even as she comes to understand how they may be undervalued; and struggles with the unstable balance between the pursuit of art and the inevitable, sometimes painful, demands of a life fully lived.

Book about making art or American racialism?
Revisado: 10-06-21
Interesting for an artist which I am. But so much racial angst! It was an eye opener for me living in Trinidad where we’re completely colour blind!! Can you Americans stop pitting yourself against each other, constantly comparing, separating and perpetuating the racial divide. Art is, I thought, judged on its own, not on who made it. Who even knows, who cares? It’s either good or not. It must stand in its own. Nell, visit Trinidad, a rainbow country

I thoroughly enjoyed this book The story moved along apace and the characters were so well developed that I was sorry to see them go. Performance was ‘spot on’. If you enjoy a good directive story, this is for you.

Fast paced. Highly recommended
Revisado: 09-29-20
Great read The story line was well constructed and moved along at a ‘page turning’ pace. The characters, their emotions and personality were thoroughly explored bringing them to life. Beautifully written, Ross kept the pace going to the end. I downloaded Black Rain Falling on Audible and kindle so had the added pleasure of listening to Onwukwe’s narration. What a powerful and sensitive reader. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good crime story. Waiting for the movie!

From the sugar plantations of Saint-Domingue to the lavish parlors of New Orleans at the turn of the 19th century, Isabel Allende's latest novel tells the story of a mulatta woman, a slave and concubine, determined to take control of her own destiny in a society where that would seem impossible. Born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue, Zarité - known as Tété - is the daughter of an African mother she never knew and one of the white sailors who brought her into bondage.

Historia
Alexandra Fuller tells the idiosyncratic story of her life growing up white in rural Rhodesia as it was becoming Zimbabwe. The daughter of hardworking, yet strikingly unconventional English-bred immigrants, Alexandra arrives in Africa at the tender age of two. She moves through life with a hardy resilience, even as a bloody war approaches. Narrator Lisette Lecat reads this remarkable memoir of a family clinging to a harsh landscape and the dying tenets of colonialism.
