Historia
Adam Deveril, the new Viscount Lynton and a hero at Salamanca, returns from the Peninsula War to find his family on the brink of ruin and the broad acres of his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. It is Lord Oversley, father of Adam's first love, who tactfully introduces him to Mr Jonathan Chaleigh, a city man of apparently unlimited wealth with no social ambitions for himself, but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his one and only daughter.

All narration sounds like similar men's voices
Revisado: 04-13-24
I love Georgette Heyer's novels, but Dominic Thorburn doesn't do her credit.
Most of his men's voices are so similar that I must keep track of who's speaking in a back-and-forth. And all the women also have deep voices. Julia's hysterical "No, no, no!" could easily be a middle aged man shouting the same thing.

Historia
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

Far too many unnecessary details
Revisado: 05-10-22
Professor Harl obviously has studied this subject in depth, and wants to share everything he knows. However, I was so overwhelmed with details that I had to stop listening.
As an example, instead of saying, “He sent messengers,” Harl says “He sent two messengers named (Chinese name) and (another Chinese name).” I don’t care how many messengers were sent, nor what their names were, and trying to retain these details kept me from following the thread of the lecture.
Another example: Harl explains that written history of the time was a group effort, unlike later histories. Fine. But he lists by name the many later historians. Why? Are their names relevant? (hint: no.)
Far too much information is thrown at the reader. I lost track of the forest because each tree was listed in detail.
Also, the lecturer is so eager to make his point that he speaks faster and faster. Please! I’m worn out!

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Not for me
Revisado: 01-13-19
Performance was adequate - I didn't care if I continued listening or not.
The book itself was not interesting. I really didn't care about the poor little rich girls with their awful aunt and governess. I'm sure there was more to the story than that, but I didn't care enough to keep reading.

Historia
In this terrifying and hilarious prequel, we witness the genesis of the zombie plague in early 19th-century England. We watch Elizabeth Bennet evolve from a nave young teenager into a savage slayer of the undead. We laugh as she begins her first clumsy training with nunchucks and katana swords and cry when her first blush with romance goes tragically awry.

A laugh-out-loud book, if you're a fan of P and P
Revisado: 11-27-18
A laugh-out-loud book, if you're a fan of P and P. The author reproduces Dear Jane's writing style very well, including the peculiarities of each family member. The narrator is superb at the same thing! This contrasts sharply with the gruesome descriptions of the zombies.
Mrs. Bennet's laments about her greenhouse being turned into a dojo are perfect. (And she once refers to it as a HoJo, which to me means Howard Johnson's 37 flavors of ice cream.)
I found the ending disappointing -- it was not a Happy Ever After, but how could it be?

Historia
Cadfael's return to his Welsh homeland for a visit proves a rather discomfiting homecoming when an honorable nobleman turns up in a patch of forest with an arrow embedded in his chest. There are questions about the arrow, the man's daughter needs Cadfael's help, and a very odd burial takes place.

A fine book and well-read; Patrick Tull is so-so
Revisado: 11-22-18
A fine book and well-read, although Patrick Tull is not consistent with the men's voices and cannot do women's voices at all.
I judge recorded books primarily by the narrator. This is a typical Brother Cadfael novel: lots of 12th century atmosphere, a murder mystery and a pair of young lovers.
Patrick Tull reads well, rolling the words around his mouth with great enjoyment. I grew a little tired of it before the novel finished, but still listened with pleasure. Unfortunately, Tull cannot do women's voices (although there aren't many women in the novel). I can't always tell the men apart by their voices, and sometimes it will sound as though one man is speaking and then the second half of the sentence sounds like someone else: the men’s voices are not consistent. Sometimes I can't tell if the narrator is speaking, or if it's Cadfael or some other character.
Nevertheless, it's a fine book and well-read. In fact, when I tried to find a better reader on Audible for Brother Cadfael, I couldn't.

Historia
They named him Thorn. They told him he was of their people, although he was so different. He was ugly in their eyes, strange, sleek-skinned instead of furred, clawless, different. Yet he was of their power class: judge-warriors, the elite, the fighters, the defenders. Thorn knew that his difference was somehow very important - but not important enough to prevent murderous conspiracies against him, against his protector, against his caste, and perhaps against the peace of the world. But when Thorn finally learned what his true role in life was to be, that the future of two worlds might hinge on him, then he had to stand alone to justify his very existence

Powerful story, superb voicing
Revisado: 11-22-18
I enjoyed this story when I first read it, but when I heard it on Audible, it had more meaning. C.J.Cherryh gave the Shonunin and the Hatani a whole culture (possibly based on the Samurai??) and Peter Gamin brought that culture to life. I did not think of the characters as having specific voices when I first read the book, but as I listened I realized that Mr. Gamin gave Duun and Thorn exactly the voices that suited them. Thorn's voice was recognizably the same as he matured from a toddler to an adult. Very well done - I think I've found a new favorite author.
Strongly recommended if you like what-if fiction.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

why do i have to have a headline before I can writ
Revisado: 06-14-18
I love Georgette Heyer, but I don't like Eve Mathieson's narration at all. She gives each character a specific voice (Sherry: forceful; Ferdy: breathy; Kitten: quiet) and doesn't vary the voice much according to the character's emotion. I must agree with the reviewer who said that she shouts the male voices and whispers the female ones - I had trouble listening for this reason.
Also, I don't like having to write a headline (which should summarize my review) before I can write the review. Surely it w\ould make more sense to write the review and *then* choose a headline.

Historia
Filled with magic, heroism, and all-too-human characters, Bujold's Sharing Knife saga is both a gripping adventure and a poignant romance. In this second volume, Fawn Bluefield, the clever farm girl, and Dag Redwing Hickory, the seasoned Lakewalker soldier-sorcerer, are newly married. Their arrival at Dag's home on Hickory Lake Camp is met with prejudice and suspicion, as many in the camp deny the literal bond between Dag and Fawn, woven in blood in the Lakewalker magical way.

Any additional comments?
The reader’s voice is very smooth and flowing, and it’s very easy to miss a word or two. Several characters have names that sound similar and I got confused. I probably will read it rather than listening if I want to repeat the book.
