Historia
This stunning novel introduces Susan Lindley, a woman adrift after her husband's death. Suddenly gifted her great uncle's Pasadena mansion, Susan decides to restore his extensive collection of preserved animals, tending to "the fur and feathers, the beaks, the bones and shimmering tails." Meanwhile, a menagerie of uniquely damaged humans - including a cheating husband and a chorus of eccentric elderly women - joins her in residence.

Expect truth.
Revisado: 01-24-23
Millet flabbergasts me. I replayed her first chapter 3 times before going on. She names what we, or at least I, think, outright… to the world. OMG!
She is astute, loves to think. She wonders about the intersection of our chemistry composition and who are.
She cares deeply for Gaia, Mother Earth and for life
That’s what this rich novel is about. …what she loves.
The reader Sands has an attitude that drips with ‘I don’t give a flip about what you, the listener think.’ She’s terrific.

Historia
On Christmas Eve, 85-year-old Miriam Caravasios steps onto the ice that surrounds her seaside estate on Maine's Mount Desert Island. As a younger woman, she used to steal out on winter nights to meet her lover, walking across the frozen reach to their secret meeting place. She knows the way—but not the year. Miriam, her mind clouded by dementia, doesn’t hear the snap of thin ice until it’s too late.

What a performance and book!
Revisado: 01-17-23
Cleverly wrought… 2 women reading the mystery. They wove the story back and forth spanning 3 generations. So well read by Katherine Conklin and Stacy Gonzalez. I loved how the vernacular of both these women reflected their generations and I loved the change of empowerment of women over the generations. Wonderful book AND audiobook.

Historia
When Ned chases Anna and their six-year-old daughter from Alaska to Maine, the two go into hiding in a run-down motel on the coast. As his pursuit of Anna and their child moves from threatening to criminal, Ned begins to alter his wife's world in ways she never could have imagined. This double-edged and satisfying story features a strong female protagonist, a thrilling plot, and a creeping sense of the apocalyptic. Sweet Lamb of Heaven builds to a shattering ending with profound implications for its characters.

Loved it.. curious about it
Revisado: 01-11-23
A novel with lots of facts about the natural world woven in. Ending lent itself to a sequel. Such an intelligent writer that I kept reading even though I don’t enjoy the supernatural in the literature I typically read.

Historia
A collection of stories depicting life in a small Virginia town in the 1940s—the happiness, heartbreak, and humor that saw America through the turbulent years of World War II and its challenging aftermath. In Johns' fictional Marshallville, a small but proud college anchors the community alongside family businesses handed down from one generation to the next. Here, with the truth that fiction offers, is a glimpse into a pivotal era with all its faults and foibles, seen through the lens of fond remembrance.

What a joy
Revisado: 12-03-22
If you’ve ever driven through a small town and wondered about the people who lived there, this is your book. Citizens of Marshallville become your next door neighbors, Their hopes, loses, loves, and interests become yours. I listened to the stories, a few every day, and reveled in their lives. Fran Moreland Johns has written marvelous, clever, stories and Katherine Conklin reads these stories with such authenticity, I was pretty sure I was in Marshallville myself. Highly recommend.

Historia
Everyone at the large agricultural college dubbed Moo U. has an agenda. Whether it's massaging data, running secret experiments, or seducing the powerful, each person is dedicated to a plan. Meet Dr. Lionel Gift, who feels that his economic principles come directly from God. Visit with "Earl Butz", who is being groomed to be the biggest hog in history. Mull over The Common Wisdom, what every secretary knows. As these agendas begin to collide, Moo trots toward a deliciously loony climax.

Don’t like this satire
Revisado: 07-30-21
Snarky reader, writer makes fun of people looking for a laugh. Subject felt dated. Gave myself permission to quit after finishing 1/2 of the book. Much better literature out there

Gorgeous writing
Revisado: 04-06-21
One incident tossed me out of the narrative. It seemed out of character and implausible. Other than that, I thought the book perfect. The prose was a joy, a thrill, like seeing a Renoir.
