I got the feeling that this was abridged, and I may have liked it more if it weren't, but overall it was pretty good. Zachary Quinto did a good job with the performance, better than a number of tv/film actors that have been hired as audiobook readers (although thus far, Adam Baldwin as Tom Stranger is the best we've heard). The story is a thin "whodunit": it's not much of a mystery (again, it might be more so if there is an unabridged version), at least to a fan of the genre, and the big reveal...isn't all that big. But that doesn't mean the story isn't good, or that it isn't interesting, because it was. Would I spend money or an Audible credit on another entry with this alternate reality or lead character? Probably not, especially abridged, but if Audible added more to the membership, I would listen to them. It was definitely good, just not great.

One of my favorite books in the fabulous Karadok seies, The Unlovely Bride matches a pair of perfectly fitting puzzle pieces. An unlikely hero and a damsel whose strength leads her to take control of her distress come together to build what could be a lifetime of love. There are challenges to meet, kisses to steal, and drama to overcome.

This is an enjoyable version of this beautiful, classic tale. The careful, mannered, second-chance love story between Anne and Captain Wentworth is brought to life with a wonderful softness that is simply lovely to listen too. Very highly recommended!

Amanda Milo writes stories that are well put together and by turns, fun, serious, interesting, and a bit off center, meaning not your typical boring rehashed tropes. This is a great audio version of this entry of what I call her "Princess Mix Up" alien abduction series. Definitely recommend!

Basic 'country vs city' romance with good sex

It's a pretty familiar trope: city girl stuck in the country and (very, very quickly) on a country boy. Will she give up her fast-paced life and everything about it after one whole week of fresh-air sex? Lol, yeah, we've read this before, but there is nothing wrong with that! We clearly love these kinds of stories or there wouldn't be so many of them, and this was a fine addition to the type. I did not read the book, I listened to it as an audiobook and might have rated it higher if that were not the case. The readers were soooo badly cast: the female reader seemed to slur a lot, sounded 16 years old and didn't seem familiar with the book before recording it because over and over again the emphasis was wrong. The male reader sounded like he was narrating a 70's nature documentary and also sounded unfamiliar with the book--- as well as sounding exactly nothing like a man proudly born and raised in the country. I'm sure the readers would have been great for something else and probably are excellent with the right material, this was just a bad fit.

I adore this book series and was excited to see the audiobooks getting released. While both the readers have good voices their reading styles grate on the nerves a bit and clearly neither are big fans of the book because they don't follow the cadence of the writing. I don't begrudge the credit I spent, but this isn't an ab I'll be listening to over and over. The books I've read a dozen times and recommend them highly in that format.

I enjoyed the first book very much, so finding the sequel to be a mash up of The Hunger Games' formula and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with the sights, smells, sounds, and names of western Asia trying to cover that up was pretty disappointing. There is even a scene that feels lifted straight out of HP4, substituting a jungle for a lake. It effectively killed all my interest in the series, but others might enjoy treading familiar ground with a good pace and characters that cannot seem to grow up (much like the world around us). Interestingly, my septuagenarian Mom liked it very much, but it must be said that she's never read the material that made this feel so derivative for me. The reader had a nice voice, but read so slowly that I found myself drifting off. All in all, it told me this was supposed to be a stand-alone book that has been Slinky-ed into a series. Again, I didn't absolutely hate, I just expected so much more originality because of the promise of the first book. :(

I enjoyed the story, and having Titus Welliver read the character he brought to physical life was a fantastic choice. But...I would estimate that at least 10-15% of this book is road directions and the names of restaurants. I could not shake the mental picture of the SNL skits "The Californians", or the idea that the author was looking for free food from the many places he name dropped, even going so far ass to choose between 2 locations (identified) of a specific one. Still, a great, slightly over the top Bosch tale ideal for old and new and alike. 😉

I'd give you specific examples of what I mean by that, but it would be a list of spoilers in case you do plan to read this. Suffice it to say that the lead character is whiny with a martyr complex and complains incessantly instead of being anything approaching a grown up. Worse, we're supposed to find the circumstances of her murder/turning to be funny. And her disinterest in even reporting the crime (making excuses for her killer that include 'he didn't mean to' and 'he was drunk' sounding like what domestic violence victims say) strikes a particularly sour note with me. I can see what the author is trying to do here, but I don't find weak people making snarky comments funny. Not a series for me.

A sweeping tale full of richly drawn characters against the backdrop of feudal Japan. Adventure, political machinations and a lushly built romance are verbally sketched very well by the performing narrator, which is something of a rarity on Audible. Highly recommend!
