Historia
In the spring of 1980, an unexpected group of musical eccentrics came together to play their very first performance at a college party in Athens, Georgia. Within a few short years, they had taken over the world–with smash records like Out of Time, Automatic for the People, Monster and Green. Raw, outrageous, and expressive, R.E.M.’s distinctive musical flair was unmatched, and a string of mega-successes solidified them as generational spokesmen.

Historia
At age 24 Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal, he had to do something spectacular on the battlefield. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.

History comes alive
Revisado: 12-29-22
History comes alive in this excellent book by Candice Millard, who is one of my favorite historians (River of Doubt, Destiny of the Republic are also must reads). The narrative in each of her books brings you into the period and pulls history forward in beautifully written prose. Churchill’s very clumsy way of being taken prisoner by the Boers, his escape and the impact of his “never quit” character further educated me about his larger-than-life personality, his determination to keep his father’s legacy in place and his path to greatness, all come into focus with greater clarity in this book.

Historia
Captain James Cook is one of the greatest maritime explorers of all time. Over three remarkable voyages of discovery into the Pacific in the latter part of the 18th century, Cook unravelled the oldest mystery surrounding the existence of Terra Australis Incognita - the Great South Land. He became the first explorer to circumnavigate New Zealand and establish that it was two main islands; discover the Hawaiian Islands for the British Empire; and left an enduring legacy.

Excellent biography, beautifully written
Revisado: 06-24-22
This is, by far, the best book I have read on Captain James Cook. Beautifully written and captured as a biography; but more importantly, written through the eyes of a historian. Loved this immensely.
