I really enjoyed this series.

Like with the previous series from this author duo, I ended up binging it (with the exception of a delay between books three and four), so the lines between the books are a bit blurred in my head. So, I'll do a single review for all four again, with a few key things that stick out mentioned.
The characters are phenomenal, and the world is great. Theo... isn't my favorite as far as love interests go, but his arc is really good.
And Rowan and Ivander are amazing together. Their arc is really good. I love a slow burn, especially enemies to lovers when it turns out neither are actually completely irredeemable. Lol. Enemies to lovers with a terrible person isn't my thing, so this was good.
It was really nice to finally see something happen with the Fae side of things, too.
My gripes with the series:
Book one features a lot of Rowan making the worst possible choice she could in a given situation (to horribly oversimplify, war nearly breaks out because she wanted vodka).
Book three involves a lot of willful miscommunications simply out of spite, a lot of dinners/political discussions.
Other than that though, I really enjoyed this.

Historia
With their Safe Zone overrun by the undead, taking refuge in the mountains seems like the safest bet for Rose, Tom, and the other survivors. There's one catch, however—between last spring's human exodus and a neighboring group's stockpiles, there's no food left to scavenge. They know to be wary of people and zombies, but a new adversary proves itself just as relentless—hunger. Supplies are slim in the wilderness, and living off the land is easier said than done. As winter sets in, and their food dwindles to nothing, they discover how far they'll go to save the ones they love.

Revisado: 11-11-23
I loved this as much as all of Fleming's previous books. Well worth the read. The characters keep growing and changing, and there's a ton of information built into the character's survival efforts.
Just don't read the last few chapters in public. Lol. I didn't expect to tear up over that particular character after what she did, but it was impossible not to cry.
The only downside is that the four narrators use different voices for different characters. I wish they'd split the characters up amongst themselves and read those parts throughout the series so the voices would be consistent from chapter to chapter. As it is, one narrator is better at the accent for Troy than the other three. One gave Francis a different accent than the other three narrators. It was odd. But everything else about the book was amazing.

I don't know what to think of this book. It's not
Revisado: 04-23-23
I guess I'll start with the narration since it nearly ruined the book for me. The male narrator sounded like that stereotypical movie trailer voice, but less enthusiastic. His sections alone nearly made me stop listening. The female narrator wasn't bad, she just sounded more like a college soccer player than an elite warrior general.
Editing-wise, there were a few points where words were missing ("to her go" instead of "to let her go"), and that bothered me. It made me wonder how much bad editing was actually in the books that I didn't notice because I listened to the audiobook.
The characters were fairly well developed, and they grew and changed a bit. One more dramatically than the other.
The sex scenes were ridiculously drawn out, more detailed than I would've liked, and simultaneously... somewhat lacking. And they didn't further the plot. It was merely for the sake of including sex scenes. For some, that's good. For me, not so much. If it's in the book, I want it to be relevant.
Their relationship, all need and power struggles, wasn't to my taste, nor were a lot of Keris' actions later in the book.
The plot was... Well, I guess this part is my fault. I liked the first two books enough to just continue the series without reading the blurb, so I thought this would pick up where they left off. It's more of a companion novel though, and it took a lot of the mystery out of it. I already knew the major plot points, just not the exact details of how they got there.
It took away from it a bit, but I've never been a fan of companion novels. I'd prefer more POVs in a single book so none of the surprises or twists are ruined and it all progresses side by side.
Honestly, though this ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, I'm not sure I'll continue the series. It'll probably depend on who they have narrate the next book. Different narrators might allow my need to finish things that I start to overcome the other problems I had with the book.

Enemies to lovers, strong character development, a
Revisado: 04-11-23
Overall, I really liked this book, but there were a few problems, and that's where the spoilers come in. To avoid spoilers, just know that I recommend this book.
The characters are amazing, all very well developed, and Lara's history makes her an incredibly complex character.
The enemies to lovers trope almost always makes me love a book, especially when done well. This book does it very well, though the thing that drives them apart again toward the end felt... more convenient for the author and the plot than realistic.
Lara was trained to push herself, to go beyond, to do whatever needs done no matter what.
***SPOILERS BELOW***.
So, for her to have gone to take a nap instead of destroying the papers she'd written enough secrets on to destroy the country she'd learned to love... It was out of character and done solely for plot progression.
I love the island kingdom and the storm season, though I really hope there's more explanation for the bridge itself. Its existence is pretty much the whole plot, but its creation and durability in the face of monstrous storms has no real explanation.
The reappearance of a sister surprised me. I was expecting the Magpie to be there, not a jilted sibling.
Loved the ending, though.
All in all, I'd recommend this, and I plan to jump into the sequel immediately.

I binged this at work this week, and it was amazing. Nitty gritty survival, characters who change and develop (sometimes for better, sometimes for worse), and a truly devastating form of the apocalypse that I haven't seen in many books.
I highly recommend this, though not for anyone squeamish or easily triggered.

I'm on the fence.
Revisado: 01-05-23
I'm not sure how to feel about this book. I mean, I finished it. It was fairly short, so it was quick. The audio narration was good.
I like the glimpses into native Alaskan culture (though they could've been explored more thoroughly), and I really like that the zombies came from sailors from the 1800s surfacing as the permafrost thawed instead of the normal bio weapon gone awry origin.
But it often felt clunky, and the tropes were a bit heavy handed.
The arc between the MC and her father felt underdeveloped, rushed, and at times, cheesy. I like that the author wanted to put the psychology aspect into it, but it just wasn't handled well.
And then, there's the dialogue. I had two problems with that.
One. These characters do a LOT of planning in the moment. Like... zombies coming at them (and these are not all slow zombies), door splintered, backed into a corner, and they have a full conversation about what to do. Multiple times, this happens, and each time is as unbelievable as the last.
Two. Nearly everything the MC said was a one liner meant to make her seem edgy or funny (or like she spoke before considering what she should say), but every single one fell flat for me.
The kind-of cliffhanger ending (though somewhat predictable to anyone with a tendency toward cynicism) made me kinda want to continue the series, but the dialogue alone makes me question that impulse.

Revisado: 06-27-22
I love these characters and the growth they're showing. The narration in the audiobook is wonderful.
I only have two complaints.
One is that the ending was a bit anticlimactic.
The other is that author seems averse to contractions. Instead of, "can't," it's always, "can not." She even goes so far as to always use "it is" or "you are" instead of the contracted forms. It makes for some clunky dialogue at times.
