I love Hardy’s rich, nuanced use of language. A wonderful complex story with characters that seem so real. The themes are relevant today as ever. Human nature doesn’t essentially change much. I loved the book.

Historia
Carson McCullers was all of 23 when she published her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. She became an overnight literary sensation, and soon such authors as Tennessee Williams were calling her "the greatest prose writer that the South [has] produced." The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter tells an unforgettable tale of moral isolation in a small southern mill town in the 1930s.

Fascinating review of human development in different regions and the reasons for the differences
Revisado: 08-17-24
The book approaches human development in a most original and interesting way. Once explained makes total sense. There are clear reasons why Europe developed the way it did and China and Africa . In the west we are given the trite message that whites are smarter. But the author delves into the real reasons why the pace of development was greater in the west. It is not because whites were smarter. Very interesting book

"Eastern Europe" has gone out of fashion since the fall of the Soviet Union. Ask someone today, and they might tell you that Estonia is in the Baltics or Scandinavia, that Slovakia is in Central Europe, and that Croatia is in the eastern Adriatic or the Balkans. In fact, Eastern Europe is a place that barely exists at all, except in cultural memory. Yet it remains a powerful marker of identity for many, with a fragmented and wide-ranging history defined by texts, myths, and memories of centuries of hardship and suffering.

Perhaps overly ambitious attempt to cover so much
Revisado: 07-22-23
I also preordered. The period and the scope of countries perhaps was too ambitious. There is so much detail that the broader picture gets a bit lost. I have no problem in a personal story. I think it’s the details that get overwhelming. I have great interest in the subject matter.
I think it would be better to get a professional reader. The lilt of the voice is somewhat irritating.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Historia
In this world of bribes, vendettas, and swindling, in which heiresses are gambled and won, Trollope's characters embody all the vices: Lady Carbury is 'false from head to foot'; her son Felix has 'the instincts of a horse, not approaching the higher sympathies of a dog'; and Melmotte - the colossal figure who dominates the book - is a 'horrid, big, rich scoundrel...a bloated swindler...a vile city ruffian'. But as vile as he is, he is considered one of Trollope's greatest creations.

Here is a gripping account of the major postwar trial of the Nazi hierarchy in World War II. The Nuremberg Trial brilliantly recreates the trial proceedings and offers a reasoned, often profound examination of the processes that created international law. From the whimpering of Kaltenbrunner and Ribbentrop on the stand to the icy coolness of Goering, each participant is vividly drawn.
